Newport Student Shocks Community by Earning Exclusive Governor’s Scholar Honor—What’s Next?

In a heartwarming testament to the spirit of community service, Newport Independent Schools senior Donovan Macario-Avila was recently honored with the prestigious Hal Smith Scholar Award by the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program. This accolade, named in honor of Harold R. Smith—a Newport native and Newport High School graduate—recognizes students who exemplify leadership, service, and academic excellence. According to Donna Watts, the Youth Service Center Coordinator for Newport Independent Schools, Macario-Avila stands out not just for his intelligence, but for his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those around him. “He’s one of those students that he’s not about, ‘me, me, me,’ but he’s about, ‘what can he do to make others’ lives better,’” she said.
The Hal Smith Award is part of a broader initiative that recognizes exceptional students upon their completion of the Governor's Scholars Program—a five-week summer program aimed at enriching educational experiences for outstanding high school juniors in Kentucky. Selected scholars like Macario-Avila are honored for their achievements and character rather than receiving a monetary prize, making the award one of the program's highest honors.
Watts describes Macario-Avila as “magnificent” and “one of a kind,” stating that if there are angels on earth, he is one of them. Known for his altruism, Macario-Avila is the president of the Newport chapter of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). His involvement in these organizations has allowed him to spearhead various community service initiatives, including food drives and supply collections for local food pantries.
In addition to his leadership roles, Macario-Avila engages with the community through the Brighton Center’s Youth Leadership Development Program. He volunteers at Saratoga Place Apartments, a senior living facility, where he not only spends time with elderly residents but also creates goodie bags to brighten their days. His commitment to service extends to his school, where he acts as a translator for Spanish-speaking families, leads tours for prospective students, and participates in events like the Healthy Community Health Fair and school coat drives.
Macario-Avila’s good nature is evident to his peers and teachers alike. “He never makes any student feel beneath him,” Watts noted, adding that students often approach him for help due to his approachable demeanor and intelligence. Earlier this year, his commitment to his fellow students earned him the role of student representative to the Newport Board of Education. In this capacity, he aims to provide a voice for students and share insights on how policy changes affect them.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Newport Schools, Macario-Avila remarked, “I’ve been involved in Newport Schools my entire life... I just wanted to be the student voice.” His passion for politics is evident; Macario-Avila has applied to all eight Ivy League schools, with his top choices being Yale University, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. He has already secured admission to the University of Louisville, where he plans to study political science.
During his time in the Governor's Scholars Program, he was inspired by conversations with notable figures, including Governor Andy Beshear. After expressing his interest in a future in politics, he even offered to assist with any upcoming campaigns. “If you plan on running for office in 2028, I would love to be a part of your campaign,” Macario-Avila told the governor, who replied, “For sure, I’ll call you.”
Watts shared an instance of Macario-Avila’s proactive nature when he took it upon himself to advocate for the family resource center’s budget after learning about a proposed cut during a visit to Frankfort. “I didn’t ask him,” she said, highlighting his self-driven commitment to community welfare.
With aspirations of one day becoming the President of the United States, Macario-Avila’s journey is just beginning. His dedication to academic excellence and community service sets a powerful example for his peers, demonstrating how one individual can make a significant impact both locally and beyond.
