You Won't Believe What Shocking Changes Are Coming to Atlanta's Metro Mall—NHL Arena to Ignite a New Era!

The City of Alpharetta, Georgia, is embarking on an ambitious project to transform the struggling North Point Mall into a vibrant mixed-use entertainment district centered around a professional NHL arena. This redevelopment aims to attract a National Hockey League team back to Atlanta, a city with a storied hockey history but no NHL franchise since the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2011.
The project will be led by Jamestown, the developer renowned for the iconic Ponce City Market in Atlanta. Jamestown was selected by New York Life, the current owner of North Point Mall, to spearhead this initiative. Tim Perry, Chief Investment Officer at Jamestown, expressed optimism about the site’s potential: “We think this is a great location for an NHL team and, hopefully, our efforts will attract an owner who wants to acquire an expansion team and bring hockey back to Atlanta.”
Collaboration will be key, as Jamestown will partner with the Machete Group, a real estate advisory and development firm specializing in sports arenas and their surrounding districts. This duo aims to reimagine the North Point Mall site, which was once one of the largest indoor malls in the country upon its opening in 1993 but has faced significant challenges in recent years, with several stores closing their doors.
While specific details of the redevelopment plan are still in the works, the project is expected to include a mix of multi-family housing, retail spaces, office buildings, hotels, and essential public transit options, alongside the proposed arena. This comprehensive approach reflects a growing trend in urban development where sports venues are integrated into broader entertainment and living areas, fostering community engagement and accessibility.
Alpharetta's city council has already laid the groundwork for this transformation by creating a Tax Allocation District, anticipating mixed-use development within a 646-acre area, which includes not only the mall site but also surrounding commercial properties. This strategic planning aims to revitalize the local economy and enhance the community’s quality of life.
Frances Bohn, Director of Development & Construction at Jamestown, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in creating vibrant spaces: “We believe great places are made in collaboration with the communities they serve. Our goal is to pair a state-of-the-art NHL arena with walkable streets, activated public spaces, and a dynamic mix of multi-family, shops, offices, and hospitality in alignment with the City’s vision for the future.”
As the North Point Mall redevelopment progresses, it represents not only an opportunity for economic revitalization but also the potential for Atlanta to reclaim its status as a significant player in the NHL landscape. The evolving plans will be closely watched by sports fans and local residents alike, as the hope for a new NHL team grows in tandem with the transformation of this key area.
With the continued rise of mixed-use developments across the nation, this project stands as a testament to the blending of sports, community, and urban planning, inviting public interest and investment into a region that is eager for both economic renewal and a return to the ice.
