Shocking Revelations: Did Michigan Coaches Cover Up Paige Shiver's Scandalous Affair with Sherrone Moore?

In a troubling revelation for the University of Michigan’s athletic department, former staffer Paige Shiver has disclosed the complex and emotionally charged nature of her relationship with Sherrone Moore, the former head football coach. In an interview with “Good Morning America,” Shiver indicated that her relationship with Moore, which spanned several years, was not only known by other coaches but also seemingly encouraged within the department.
Shiver reported being tasked with providing emotional support to Moore during critical moments, including game halftimes, where she was instructed by senior coaches to “calm him down” when he was upset. "No one cared about my feelings. They wanted to use me to help him so that they could get through the season," she stated, reflecting the pressure she felt to maintain her position within the organization.
Moore was placed on probation for 18 months following an incident that occurred after his dismissal for cause in December 2025. After initially denying their relationship, both Shiver and Moore eventually confirmed their involvement. Following his termination, Moore allegedly went to Shiver’s house, where he threatened self-harm and blamed her for the circumstances.
Moore faced legal repercussions after pleading no contest to charges of misdemeanor malicious use of a telecommunications device and misdemeanor trespassing. This plea deal was part of a broader investigation into his conduct, which raised serious questions about the culture within Michigan's athletic department.
According to Shiver, her relationship with Moore began in January 2022, while he served as an assistant coach. The situation became more complicated when Shiver discovered she was pregnant with Moore's child. Despite the emotional turmoil, she opted for an abortion based on medical advice, citing her pre-existing condition of Pompe Disease, a genetic disorder affecting muscle strength. She emphasized that Moore supported her decision, telling her, “You had to do what’s right for your body.”
In the wake of Moore's sentencing, Judge Cedric Simpson expressed concern for Moore's wife, Kelli, who was present during the proceedings. Kelli and Sherrone Moore, married since 2015 and parents to three children, are now navigating the fallout from this scandal.
Warde Manuel, Michigan's athletic director, expressed feelings of betrayal upon discovering Moore's affair with Shiver. "I felt hurt for all the staff and the student-athletes and the university," Manuel remarked, highlighting the extensive impact of Moore's actions on the community. He had previously set clear boundaries regarding employee conduct, especially following other significant scandals at the university, such as those involving former provost Martin Philbert and former president Mark Schlissel.
“It’s hard as a leader to have to enforce discipline on people that you care about and that you believe in,” Manuel said, stressing the emotional toll on the department's leadership while also maintaining accountability.
Moore had been serving as Michigan's offensive coordinator for three seasons before being appointed head coach after Jim Harbaugh's departure in January 2024. Under Moore’s leadership, the Wolverines recorded an 8-5 season in 2024 and a 9-3 record in 2025, despite facing scrutiny due to a two-game suspension related to an advance-scouting scheme during the same season. The university began investigating Moore's relationship with Shiver amid a series of scandals, including allegations against former co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss for hacking into female athletes' accounts across the country.
In light of these events, the University of Michigan is now taking steps to assess and rectify the culture of its athletic department, recognizing the need for comprehensive reforms to prevent similar situations in the future. As the fallout continues, the university community grapples with the implications of these revelations, which serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of ethical conduct and accountability in athletics.
