Jessica Baker’s Shocking $20K Fundraiser: Will Her Rivals Even Stand a Chance Now?

The upcoming election in southern Duval County's HD 17 may reveal whether Democrat Bryson Morgan can mount a more formidable challenge against incumbent Rep. Jessica Baker than he did two years ago. However, initial indications suggest that Morgan's chances may not be improving.
In his latest quarterly fundraising report, as of March 31, Morgan, an Amazon driver who previously ran for the seat at just 21 years old, raised a meager total of just over $200. This amount includes a personal loan of $100 he made to his campaign. Interestingly, while his candidate page lists an address in the Baymeadows area of the district, the address tied to his loan is in Avondale, which falls within HD 13, currently represented by Democratic Rep. Angie Nixon.
Efforts to reach Morgan for clarification on his residency and his motivations for running in a district where his own fundraising report raises questions about his commitment did not yield a response as of Saturday morning.
On the other hand, Rep. Jessica Baker, despite being unable to raise funds during the recent Legislative Session, managed to secure over $20,000 in contributions before the session began in January. Notably, several Police Benevolent Associations and prominent lobbyist Ron Book contributed to her campaign, both from his law firm and personal capacity.
In their last matchup, Baker received approximately 58% of the vote against Morgan. Despite hopes among Democrats for improved performance in a potential mid-term wave election—spurred by backlash against Republican policies in Washington, D.C.—Morgan faces a significant uphill battle. The current fundraising figures suggest he has substantial ground to cover before he can pose a serious challenge to Baker's re-election bid.
