Is Northern Illinois' Coach Hammock REALLY Leaving for the Seahawks? Shocking Details Inside!

Northern Illinois University’s head coach, Thomas Hammock, is making a significant career move as he transitions to the NFL, taking on the role of running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks. This news, first reported by ESPN, marks a notable shift for Hammock, who has led the Huskies for the past seven seasons.

During Hammock's tenure at Northern Illinois, the team posted a record of 35 wins and 47 losses, with a disappointing 3-9 record in the 2025 season. However, before last year's struggles, the Huskies enjoyed some success, reaching consecutive bowl games in 2023 and 2024. A highlight of recent seasons was their stunning upset over Notre Dame in September 2024, which turned out to be the Fighting Irish's only loss during the regular season, before they ultimately fell to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff national championship game.

The pinnacle of Hammock’s coaching career at NIU came in 2021, when the Huskies achieved a 9-5 record, clinching the Mid-American Conference (MAC) title. They secured the championship with a decisive 41-23 victory over Kent State but faced a tough ending with a 47-41 loss to Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl.

As Hammock departs, Northern Illinois is poised to enter a new chapter in its football program. The Huskies are set to join the revamped Mountain West Conference in 2026, leaving behind its long-time association with the MAC. This transition will involve some challenging travel, with the Huskies’ shortest road trip being to Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Other away games will take them to New Mexico, San Jose State, and UNLV.

Interestingly, as NIU shifts to the Mountain West, the MAC has expanded by accepting Sacramento State into the conference. This move exemplifies the often perplexing landscape of college athletics, where teams from diverse geographical regions compete in conferences that may not seem to align logically, such as a team from Illinois joining a conference predominantly based on the West Coast.

Hammock's new role with the Seahawks comes after the team’s former running backs coach, Kennedy Polamalu, took a leave of absence in December and was not expected to return for the 2026 season. The Seahawks concluded their previous campaign successfully, clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC and ultimately winning Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots.

This transition not only reflects Hammock's aspirations but also highlights the ongoing movement within college coaching, where opportunities in the NFL continue to draw talented coaches. As he steps into this new role, Hammock will bring a wealth of experience and new strategies to the Seahawks, potentially enhancing their running game as they aim for continued success in the league.
