Greg Steube's Shocking Re-Election Move in CD 17: What This New Map Means for YOU!

The political landscape of Florida's 17th Congressional District is poised for a notable shift, as U.S. Rep. Greg Steube announces his intention to seek re-election, despite potential changes to the district's boundaries. The map, currently awaiting the signature of Governor Ron DeSantis, outlines a district that stretches from Sarasota to Fort Myers and is heavily tilted towards conservative representation.

Steube, who has represented various portions of Southwest Florida during his decade-long political career, expressed optimism about his re-election bid. In a statement provided to Florida Politics, he noted, “I will continue to seek re-election to Florida’s 17th Congressional District. The new district boundaries include the overwhelming majority of the constituents I have had the honor of representing in both Congress and the state Legislature over the past 10 years, and I look forward to continuing to serve them in the next Congress.”

Steube first secured a seat in Congress in 2018 after a competitive primary for an open position, which initially included significant parts of the Florida Heartland. He successfully won re-election in 2020, followed by victories in both 2022 and 2024, as the district evolved to become more coastal and expanded into Charlotte County.

The proposed map indicates a significant geographic shift for Congressional District 17. Under the new boundaries, the district will extend north to the Sarasota County border and follow the coastline southward, primarily bordered by Interstate 75 to the east. This revised configuration will encompass all of Charlotte County and a segment of Lee County, including the entire city of Fort Myers.

Politically, District 17 maintains a solidly conservative base, aligning well with Steube’s political stance. In the 2024 Presidential Election, approximately 60.5% of voters in the district cast their ballots for former President Donald Trump, while less than 38.5% supported Democrat Kamala Harris. This significant Republican majority likely positions Steube favorably as he campaigns for his fifth term in office.

Speculation surrounding which district Steube would run in has been prevalent, given his history of representing various Southwest Florida areas in both the U.S. Congress and the Florida Legislature. Ultimately, he has decided to continue his pursuit within the same district number he currently represents.

The upcoming election for Florida's 17th Congressional District not only reflects Steube’s ambitions but also reveals broader trends in American politics, particularly in pivotal swing states like Florida, where redistricting can significantly influence electoral outcomes. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Steube’s re-election campaign will be closely watched, especially in light of the district’s conservative leanings and shifting demographics.
