From Soccer Fields of Brazil to Maine's Basketball Courts: How This Underdog Became a Sensation Overnight!

In a thrilling upset at the Class C North boys basketball semifinal, the Washington Academy Raiders overcame a late-game deficit to defeat the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 52-42 on February 16, 2026, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Heading into the fourth quarter, the No. 5 seed Raiders were trailing 37-29. However, a gritty performance fueled by junior Luis Rosa allowed Washington Academy to rally back, scoring 10 consecutive points and ultimately securing their place in the next round of the playoffs.
“I said to my assistant coach, I don’t know what happened, but I think Luis happened,” remarked Washington Academy coach Justin Crosman after the game. Rosa, the only boarding student on the team and originally from Brazil, has quickly become a standout player in this year's Maine high school basketball tournament.
Despite having grown up playing soccer, Rosa showcased his adaptability on the basketball court, contributing significantly during the crucial final quarter. He ignited the Raiders’ comeback with back-to-back and-1 plays, demonstrating both skill and an infectious energy that motivated his teammates. “We work hard every day, so I’m just here to do my job,” Rosa said after the victory. “I came all the way from Brazil.”
Rosa's determination and enthusiasm were palpable as he described the impact of coach Crosman's words before the fourth quarter: “We sat down, coach told us, ‘It’s right now or never. If we lose this game, we’re done,’” he recalled. “And I don’t want to be done. I want to keep going.”
Such a turnaround not only highlights Rosa's individual talent but also the collective effort of the Raiders. Coach Crosman praised Rosa as a “great kid to have on the team,” emphasizing his positivity and encouragement towards his teammates. “Super positive, probably talks more than anybody,” Crosman added, highlighting the importance of team spirit in high-stakes situations.
After transitioning from soccer to basketball only a few years ago, Rosa expressed his surprise at finding himself in such a competitive atmosphere. “It’s awesome, actually. I never imagined it before. I started playing basketball a couple of years ago, so I never imagined playing at this level, a lot of people watching me,” he reflected, clearly enjoying the spotlight.
Washington Academy's win ended Foxcroft Academy's strong season. Senior forward Lennon McAfee, a standout player known for overcoming personal challenges, led Foxcroft with 17 points, tying with teammate Lucas Sands, who also contributed significantly to the game with seven rebounds and five steals. McAfee's performance this season has been particularly noteworthy as he has emerged as one of the top offensive threats in Maine high school basketball.
The emotional intensity of the game reflected the high stakes of the tournament, as the Raiders and Ponies battled not just for a win but for the chance to continue their respective journeys in the playoffs. “I love pressure,” Rosa said, affirming his comfort under the bright lights of tournament basketball. “The more people, the better.”
With Rosa leading the Raiders in scoring with 13 points and adding six rebounds, Washington Academy is now poised to advance to the Class C North semifinals on Thursday, ready to carry the momentum from this impressive comeback victory.
As the high school basketball season progresses, the performances of players like Rosa and McAfee serve as a testament to the passion and resilience found in the sport. The upcoming games promise to be just as exciting, with teams like Washington Academy continuing to push through challenges to pursue a championship.
