Cullman Boys Stun Randolph in Epic 3-2 PK Shootout—Will This Shocking Win Change the Playoffs Forever?

CULLMAN, Ala. – In a thrilling start to the Class 6A 2026 state soccer playoffs, the Cullman Bearcats built on their home victory against Ft. Payne by facing off against Randolph in the second round. The stakes were high, and the intensity on the field was palpable as neither team managed to score in regulation or overtime, leading to a tense penalty kick shootout. Ultimately, the Bearcats triumphed, edging the Raiders 3-2 to advance to the third round.

The match was marked by physical play from the outset, with both teams fiercely contesting every inch of the field. Randolph appeared to have opened the scoring in the first half, only for a penalty to nullify their goal. As the first half ended scoreless, both teams showcased impressive goalkeeping, thwarting opportunities on both sides. The second half similarly unfolded with missed chances; once again, a potential goal by Randolph was negated by a penalty. With just 20 seconds remaining, a penalty awarded to Randolph could have sealed their victory, but Cullman’s defense held strong, sending the game into overtime.

Overtime proved equally fruitless as neither team could find the back of the net. The match then transitioned to a five-player penalty shootout, where senior goalkeeper Levi Hokanson made a crucial save on the first penalty, setting the tone for Cullman. Senior Carlos Medina capitalized on this momentum by scoring the first goal for the Bearcats. Randolph initially responded well, converting their next two penalties, but Cullman’s junior Reed Flores and sophomore Blayce Fisher scored their attempts, putting the Bearcats in a favorable position with a 3-2 lead. Both teams missed their fourth penalty, but as the final shot from Randolph sailed high, Cullman celebrated their hard-fought victory.

Head coach Will Drake expressed immense pride in his team following the win. He highlighted the importance of resilience and teamwork, crediting his coaching staff, particularly coach Trent Dean, for instilling a mindset that setbacks can lead to comebacks. “We’re going to make this place a fortress,” Drake said, emphasizing the hard work his players had put in throughout the season. The palpable energy from the student section and local supporters added to the atmosphere, creating an electrifying home-field advantage.

Drake also praised Hokanson for his remarkable performance in goal, noting that all of the team’s goalkeepers had dedicated themselves to rigorous training throughout the season. “When you go and make that save initially on a penalty shootout, that puts enormous pressure on the other team,” he added, acknowledging Hokanson's critical role in the victory.

Reflecting on the team’s recent achievements, including advancing past the first round for the first time in several years, Drake feels blessed to carry on the legacy of Cullman High School soccer, which boasts a rich history dating back to the 2002 state champions. “We’re fulfilling expectations that have been set before us,” he remarked, hinting at the resurgence of a competitive spirit within the program.

As the Bearcats look ahead, they are aware of the formidable challenges that await. “We’re seeing great teams,” Drake acknowledged, with their next opponent being Gadsden City. Scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m., the upcoming match promises to test the Bearcats' resilience further in the ongoing playoffs. The road to the state championship is fraught with challenges, yet the team remains committed to their preparation and determination to succeed.
