Surfers off the remote south coast of Western Australia recently captured a stunning natural phenomenon: a 40-meter waterspout formed by the collision of powerful wave systems. This extraordinary sight was documented by photographer Ben Allen and surfer Chris White, who encountered the spectacle approximately 60 kilometers offshore.
White, who first witnessed this formation about a decade ago during an ocean outing, felt compelled to return last year and capture the event on video. The footage, released earlier this month, gained rapid attention online, amassing millions of views and even prompting some social media users to speculate that it was generated by artificial intelligence.
After a grueling six-hour journey on a jet ski through rough seas and rain, Allen and White finally spotted the spout from a distance. "You just see this spout from miles away and as you get closer it gets louder and louder," White said. "It’s just a spectacle." Allen estimated that the spray shot up to roughly 40 meters, matching the altitude of his filming drone, with water splashing even higher.
This rare event was explained by Professor Charitha Pattiaratchi from the Ocean Institute at The University of Western Australia. He noted that the formation resulted from deep surrounding waters and specific wave conditions. "It's basically two different swell waves coming from two different directions and then they come over the reef and crash into each other ... then the big spout going up," Pattiaratchi elaborated. While similar collisions occur at many beaches, they generally manifest on a much smaller scale.
Adding to the rarity of this event, wave dynamics expert Arnold Van Rooijen, also from The University of Western Australia, described the waterspout as a "unique combination of the geomorphology of the reefs and the symmetry of the water depths." He emphasized that he has documented many waves throughout his career but has never witnessed anything remotely close to this phenomenon.
For safety reasons, White and Allen have chosen not to disclose the exact location of their sighting. However, the stunning visual spectacle serves as a reminder not only of nature's wonders but also of the importance of ocean awareness and safety for those who venture into its depths.
