European Fitness Industry Flourishes at FIBO 2026
FIBO 2026, Europe’s largest fitness and wellness trade show, wrapped up this past weekend in Cologne, Germany, drawing nearly 200,000 attendees from 136 countries. This year's event marked a significant increase from previous years, indicating a vibrant global interest in fitness, wellness, and longevity.
According to event organizers, over 175,000 people participated, including a diverse mix of founders, C-suite executives, fitness influencers, and fitness enthusiasts. The extensive exhibition featured more than 1,000 brands ranging from fitness equipment manufacturers to wellness tech companies.
One of the standout attractions was the annual Hyrox race, which took place inside one of the exhibition halls, infusing a competitive spirit into the trade show atmosphere. The excitement was palpable as attendees explored the latest and greatest offerings in the fitness industry.
This surge in attendance aligns with a recent report by Deloitte and EuropeActive, which highlighted that European fitness memberships have reached 75.5 million, with revenues jumping 9.1% to €39.1 billion (roughly $44.5 billion). This growth signals the increasing importance of the fitness sector within the broader health and wellness landscape.
“FIBO is not just a meeting place for the industry, it is its compass,” said event director Silke Frank. “Anyone who wants to understand where the global fitness market is heading will find the answers here.”
The push to position FIBO as the premier global fitness and wellness event is clear, with organizers aiming to attract not only European visitors but also a diverse international audience. As Michael Köhler, managing director of event organizer RX Deutschland, stated, “FIBO 2026 has impressively demonstrated that the fitness industry is evolving into a cornerstone of the health sector.”
Trends in Strength Training and Pilates
The rising popularity of strength training was evident throughout the trade show, with numerous brands showcasing equipment from basic free weights to advanced selectorized machines. Companies like Gym80 presented innovative machines designed for serious lifters, including a Smith machine that replicates the bar path of free weights, and features like “Load Drop” that allows for drop sets without removing plates.
Another notable participant, Miami-based Skelcore, highlighted new products such as a chest-supported rowing machine and a plate-loaded glute-ham machine, showcasing their commitment to advanced training methods. Additionally, Life Fitness / Hammer Strength was on hand with their original H-Squat machine, affectionately dubbed the “Legasaurus.”
Pilates also had a significant presence at FIBO 2026, reflecting its status as a leading workout modality in boutique fitness. Numerous brands showcased their reformers, with Technogym displaying its Italian-designed models alongside industry leaders like Balanced Body and Merrithew. The rise of connected Pilates equipment was evident, with brands like Your Reformer and NordicTrack unveiling digitally equipped reformers.
Advancements in Wellness and Recovery Technologies
Another notable theme at the trade show was the advancement of wellness and recovery protocols. Emerging technologies, including high-altitude recovery machines, were prominently featured. For instance, Turkish brand HPO Tech showcased its Apex Hypobaric Chamber, which is distinct from the more widely known hyperbaric chambers, while German company Mitovit presented its hypoxic training system, endorsed by longevity influencer Bryan Johnson.
These therapies promise benefits like increased red blood cell production and improved muscle efficiency, underscoring the growing recognition of recovery as an integral part of fitness. Other innovative products included WellFit, which introduced a full-body skincare mist, and Gharieni Group that unveiled a Theragun-equipped robotic massage bed and a dry bed mimicking float therapy.
As the fitness industry continues to evolve, FIBO 2026 exemplified how the sector is not only focused on traditional strength training but is also embracing innovative approaches to wellness and recovery. The event underscored the growing social significance of fitness and preventive health, paving the way for future developments that may soon be found in gyms across the United States and beyond.
