Seahawks GM Drops Bombshell on 2026 Draft Plans: What Shocking Trade Could Change Everything?

In a rare move for an NFL general manager, Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider has publicly stated his intention to trade during the upcoming draft. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Schneider candidly remarked, “It’s no secret with us. We have four picks, so we’ll be looking to move back,” as reported by ESPN’s Brady Henderson.
The Seahawks find themselves in a unique position as the reigning Super Bowl champions. However, they are also at a disadvantage with the fewest draft picks in the league. Unlike other teams, Seattle will not have the opportunity to draft until the 32nd overall pick. If the Seahawks fail to make a trade to acquire additional selections, there will be immense pressure on their four picks to contribute meaningfully to the roster. A single poor selection could hinder the team's roster construction for at least another offseason.
Schneider is acutely aware of the potential stakes involved. “We've talked within our division,” he noted, mentioning the possibility of trading within the NFC West. This admission is significant, as trading within the division has traditionally been frowned upon. However, Schneider emphasized the importance of relationships with division rivals, stating, “Everybody in our division, we would trade with. We have good relationships with all three of those teams.” This willingness to engage with division rivals could be pivotal if the Arizona Cardinals consider moving back into the first round to select a quarterback like Alabama’s Ty Simpson ahead of the New York Jets at No. 33.
Despite their championship status, the Seahawks have experienced significant roster changes due to free agency. They lost notable players such as running back Kenneth Walker III, pass-rusher Boye Mafe, cornerback Riq Woolen, and safety Coby Bryant. The departures of Woolen and Bryant particularly highlight a pressing need to bolster the secondary. In response, B/R’s NFL Scouting Department has projected that the Seahawks might select Chris Johnson, a cornerback from San Diego State, in their latest mock draft.
While Schneider has made it clear that he is open to trading their draft selection, the importance of making strategic choices cannot be overstated. The Seahawks not only need to secure valuable talent but also to recover from losses that could impact their competitiveness in the coming season.
