You Won't Believe How Military Training Transformed This Ordinary Person’s Life Forever!

At 71 years young, Tom Marlett exemplifies resilience and dedication to fitness, a journey that began in his childhood in Altoona, Pennsylvania. His athletic endeavors started at Saint Mary’s parochial school, inspired by his father, who coached football there. Initially intimidated by the older kids, Marlett persevered and eventually made a name for himself on the gridiron, becoming an offensive guard and defensive linebacker at Roosevelt Junior High School.

Marlett's talent extended beyond football. He also excelled in track, where he was noted as the “biggest kid on the track” during his time running the 100-yard dash and participating in relay races. His athleticism culminated in wrestling, where he had a standout ninth-grade season, finishing with a record of twelve wins, all by pins, except for one loss to a formidable opponent from State College.

Transitioning to Altoona High School, Marlett continued to compete in three sports. However, the rigors of wrestling and the physical demands of cutting weight took their toll on him, ultimately leading him to focus on football. He played as an offensive guard and strong-side linebacker, paving the way for his next steps in athletics.

After high school, Marlett joined the Central Pennsylvania Whitetail Bucks, a semi-professional football team, where he honed his skills and developed a love for competitive sports. His journey took a significant turn in 1979 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, seeking discipline and personal growth.

The Army's physical training regimen kept him in peak condition. Daily workouts included stretching, push-ups, and running five to six miles. Marlett completed biannual fitness tests throughout his 26-year military career, consistently meeting the stringent standards set for younger service members. “I always met my age requirements,” he recalls, noting that he could even meet the standards for the 17-21 age group until he retired.

His military service was not just about fitness; it was also a path that led him to travel extensively, including time spent in Korea, Central and South America, and at the U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Florida. During this period, he accrued two bachelor's degrees—one in Business Management and another in Human Resources—and a master's degree in International Relations.

Even after retirement, Marlett didn't abandon his active lifestyle. While his workouts have adjusted due to age and previous injuries—including multiple knee surgeries and a total knee replacement—he remains committed to fitness. “What I used to be able to do and what I can do now are two different things,” he reflects. His current routine includes shorter sessions of resistance training and swimming, coupled with treadmill workouts.

Marlett's love for adventure hasn’t diminished either. He recently sold his 850-pound motorcycle after a mishap caused by a knee buckle. “That bike’s too heavy for you right now,” he acknowledged, suggesting he may consider a smaller model in the future.

At 5-foot-10 and weighing 240 pounds, Marlett is mindful of his health, aiming to shed 20 to 30 pounds while enjoying life’s indulgences, admitting to a recent ice cream treat as a necessary guilty pleasure. His philosophy for the youth is clear: “You don’t have to be the tough guy, but you need to be that person who likes to work out because all that training will benefit you in the long run.” He emphasizes the importance of consistency over intensity—encouraging young people to engage in physical activities for 30-45 minutes daily.

Marlett's journey offers a motivational blueprint for many, particularly seniors and youth alike. George Thomas Kattouf, developer of AgelessTimeless.com and a martial arts instructor for over 40 years, advocates for keeping seniors fit through martial arts training. He invites those aged 50 and above in the Blair County area to share their fitness stories or consider participating in the Fitness Track.

As Marlett continues to navigate the challenges and joys of aging, his story serves as a testament to the importance of maintaining physical fitness throughout one’s life, showcasing that with determination and adaptability, it’s never too late to prioritize health.
