You Won't Believe What Happens When Kaukauna HS Takes a Shot at Mental Health Awareness!

KAUKAUNA, WI (WLUK) — In a pioneering effort to promote mental health awareness, Kaukauna hosted the state's first-ever "Go Lime Green" basketball game. This unique event was organized in partnership with NAMI Fox Valley, a local chapter of the national non-profit dedicated to supporting individuals grappling with mental illness.

"I think the more that we are normalizing the conversation and making it okay to talk about, we are then empowering people to reach out for help, to talk about it, and potentially seek out services if they're needed," said Megan Zimmerman, Outreach Program Director at NAMI Fox Valley.

The game featured lime green shirts worn by fans, players from both Kaukauna and Neenah, and even the orchestra. Lime green has come to symbolize mental health awareness, making it a fitting choice for the occasion.

Kaukauna High School psychologist Tina Scott emphasized the importance of creating a space where discussions around wellness are normalized. "It's okay to not be okay, for kids to lean on one another, lean on adults in the school, reach out," she said. The school has made significant investments in mental health initiatives, particularly following the tragic loss of several students and teachers to suicide about a dozen years ago.

Zimmerman praised Kaukauna High School for its longstanding commitment to prioritizing students' mental health. "When I think of a school that really is prioritizing students' mental health and has for many years, they are a school that absolutely comes to mind," she remarked. While Kaukauna may be leading the charge, Scott noted that it is part of a broader trend among schools to address mental health issues.

In recent years, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a noticeable increase in student awareness regarding mental health. "I think even within the last five years, post-COVID, that people just realize that anxiety and mental health conditions for teenagers are a real thing," Scott explained. She noted that these open conversations have led students to seek help and pursue healing.

Kaukauna High School continues to enhance its mental health initiatives by collaborating with other school districts and family services. They also conduct regular mental wellness checks with students. Events like the "Go Lime Green" basketball game cap off a week-long school-wide program aimed at promoting mental health awareness.
