You Won't Believe Why Delta Firefighters Are Being Celebrated – The Shocking Truth About School Snacks!

B.C.’s school administrators have recently recognized the Delta Firefighters for their impactful role in addressing food insecurity among students in local schools. The BC Principals’ & Vice-Principals’ Association (BCPVPA) announced the recipients of its 2025 Partnership Awards, which honor exceptional organizations and individuals committed to creating supportive environments in public schools across British Columbia.

Among this year’s honorees is the Delta Firefighters Healthy Snack Program, initiated by the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society in collaboration with the Delta School District. This program was nominated for the award due to its significant impact on students' wellbeing.

Launched in March 2021, the Healthy Snack Program began in six North Delta schools as a response to rising food security challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the initiative has expanded its reach, now serving 39 elementary and secondary schools as well as special programs. The primary goal is to eliminate barriers and stigma associated with food insecurity, ensuring that every child has access to nutritious food essential for their growth and learning.

Each month, off-duty Delta firefighters volunteer their time to supply schools with healthy snacks for students in need, creating a no-barrier setting where children can freely access food whenever they feel hungry. Remarkably, the program operates at no cost to schools or students, with the majority of its funding coming directly from local firefighters through a payroll deduction program. Members of the fire department contribute a portion of their paychecks specifically to support this charitable initiative.

The program's growth is evident in the increasing number of students it supports. The participation jumped from 900 students in the 2021-2022 school year to over 2,000 students last year, highlighting the pressing need for such programs in the community.

In a statement recognizing their achievement, the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society expressed gratitude for the partnership with Delta schools. “As firefighters, we have given a commitment to our community, both on and off the job. When we identified an emerging trend of food insecurity, we found a way to step in and do something about it,” the society stated. They emphasized the support received from the school district, highlighting collaboration from administration to child and youth care workers.

The firefighters were celebrated among five recipients at the awards ceremony held at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver Hotel on November 21, 2025. BCPVPA president Dr. Shannon Behan spoke about the significance of these awards, noting that they recognize the unwavering commitment of each recipient and their contributions to the community. “Celebrating the awards helps the BCPVPA illuminate what is taking place in B.C. schools everywhere in the province, every day,” Behan stated in a press release. “School communities benefit from the actions and generosity of many dedicated individuals, organizations, and businesses who are quietly making a difference.”

The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society continues to welcome donations to support the Healthy Snack Program, which can be made through their website at deltafirefighters.com/delta-firefighters-healthy-snack-program.
