You Won't Believe Who Just Took Over as Greenville Liberty's Head Coach – Shocking Changes Ahead!

GREENVILLE — In an exciting development for the local sports scene, Abby Minihan has been named the head coach of the Greenville Liberty, a preprofessional women's soccer club. Minihan brings over a decade of coaching experience, most recently with USC Upstate, along with a distinguished athletic background. Her credentials not only include being a star player but also holding a master’s degree in human resource development, with expertise in team performance, leadership, and organizational effectiveness.

Minihan's unique approach emphasizes holistic athlete development. “I’ve always believed that when athletes understand who they are — not just what they do — they perform more freely and compete at a higher level,” she stated in a news release on March 25. Her commitment to developing confident and resilient individuals is expected to elevate the Liberty's performance both on and off the field.

She is supported in her mission by Zach Prince, the general manager and sporting director for the Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty, who highlighted Minihan’s approach as a significant asset for the team's upcoming season. “Abby is deeply committed to developing the whole person, not just the player," Prince noted. "Her experience at the highest levels, both on and off the field, equips her to make a meaningful impact on every young woman who comes through our program.”

Before her coaching career, Minihan was a standout athlete at the University of Michigan, where she was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, the collegiate equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. She holds the record as the all-time leading scorer for Michigan and is a proud member of the University of Michigan Athletics Hall of Honor. Since graduating in 2003, she has coached at various institutions, including Syracuse, Liberty University, Western Michigan, and Anderson University, solidifying her reputation in the world of college soccer.

Expressing her enthusiasm for her new role, Minihan remarked, “I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity and the chance to be part of what the Liberty is building. There is already a strong foundation in place, and I look forward to helping shape a team culture that competes at a high level.”

Minihan’s arrival comes at a pivotal moment for the Liberty, as Greenville Pro Soccer prepares to open the new GE Vernova Park at BridgeWay Station in June. This 6,300-seat venue will serve as home to the Liberty and Triumph, marking a significant step forward for women’s soccer in the region. It will also host a variety of community events, youth sports, and concerts, further cementing its role as a hub for local activities.

Wallace Cheves, chairman of Greenville Pro Soccer, emphasized the importance of this new chapter, stating, “This is an important moment for the Liberty and for the continued growth of women’s soccer in Greenville. We’re building something that will have a lasting impact, and Abby is the right leader to help shape what comes next.”

The Liberty will also field a U-20 team this summer, competing in a six-game schedule from mid-June through late July, with the potential for postseason play. For schedule and ticket updates, fans can visit greenvilleliberty.com.

As Minihan steps into this leadership role, her vision to foster a culture of personal and athletic development may not only inspire the players on the Liberty but also resonate throughout the community, contributing to the growth of women’s soccer in Greenville and beyond.
