Smartphone Market Trends of 2025

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments are expected to grow by 1.5 percent year-on-year, reaching approximately 1.25 billion units. This growth is attributed to a surge in sales from Apple during the holiday quarter, a strong demand from emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, and Brazil, and a stabilization in the Chinese market.

In particular, Apple’s shipments are projected to increase by 6.1 percent year-on-year, a notable jump from the previous year’s growth of 3.9 percent. This year, Apple is set to achieve record shipments, surpassing 247 million units. This success has been particularly pronounced in China, where the demand for the iPhone 17 has significantly bolstered overall performance. By October and November, Apple captured a market share exceeding 20 percent, leading IDC to revise its Q4 forecast for Apple’s growth in China from 9 percent to 17 percent year-on-year.

Another IDC report highlighted that India’s smartphone market reached a five-year high in the third quarter of 2025, growing by 4.3 percent year-on-year to 48 million units. Apple achieved its highest-ever quarterly shipments in India during this period, reaching 5 million units, marking a substantial 25.6 percent year-on-year growth. The iPhone 16 remained the most-shipped smartphone in India, while the newly launched iPhone 17 Series and iPhone Air accounted for 16 percent of Apple’s Q3 shipments.

In terms of brand performance, Vivo maintained its dominance for the seventh consecutive quarter, while OPPO overtook Samsung to secure the second position, thanks to aggressive strategies in offline channels. Among the leading brands, Motorola reported the highest year-on-year growth at 52.4 percent.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max showcase Apple's latest A19 Pro chipset and are equipped with three 48MP Fusion cameras. The Motorola Razr Ultra offers a 7-inch foldable display with an impressive peak brightness of 4,000 nits and features AI capabilities.

AI has also seeped into the mobile experience with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which integrates Google's Gemini for advanced functionalities such as real-time conversation translation and enhanced photo editing. Similarly, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra incorporates AI features like dynamic wallpapers and AI-powered writing tools.

Advanced camera technology remains a focal point for manufacturers. The iPhone 17 Pro Max sports a triple rear camera system capable of recording 4K videos at 120 frames per second. On the other hand, the OPPO Find X9 Pro features a unique periscope telephoto lens designed in collaboration with Hasselblad.
