You Won't Believe What's Coming to Bellaire: A $10 Million Recreation Complex That Will Change Everything!

BELLAIRE – A significant development for the community of Bellaire took a step forward on Monday morning as Ohio State Senator Brian Chavez joined local leaders to break ground on a new recreation and entertainment complex. This ambitious project, which is expected to serve as a hub for family activities and community gatherings, is made possible through a federal grant of $1,468,912 from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program, complemented by an additional $200,000 from the State Capital Budget Fund, secured by Sen. Chavez.

Construction is set to begin on June 15, and the complex will feature eight pickleball courts, a hiking trail, a new concession stand, and an entertainment stage. The project has been driven by local leaders, notably Bellaire Councilwoman Janet Richardson, who worked alongside the late former mayor, Ed Marling. Richardson recalled receiving the exciting news about the grant from Marling on December 20, 2024, stating, “We were absolutely thrilled. What a great Christmas gift for the village of Bellaire.”

Adding to the vision for the complex, Pastor Bill Marinelli from Faith Fellowship Church has been advocating for a pickleball community in Bellaire. He reminisced about how he began playing the sport a decade ago, noting that it was once considered primarily for older players. “It started out as an old man sport, but now it’s moving down to the kids,” he explained. Marinelli highlighted the sport’s increasing popularity, especially among younger generations, pointing to the fact that the leading female professional in pickleball is just 18 years old and began playing at age 10.

With the rise of pickleball in America, Marinelli emphasized the importance of promoting the sport in local schools and communities. “If you don’t know what pickleball is, you must have your head in a bucket somewhere because it’s everywhere,” he said. He also expressed hope that local youth might one day compete in the Olympics, as pickleball is projected to be featured in the games by 2028.

Senator Chavez, who was present at the groundbreaking ceremony, underscored the significance of the project for the community. He stated, “When I come to these projects, I want to make sure that it’s going to be impactful to the community. We don’t want to just spend money and pat ourselves on the back.” He stressed the importance of ensuring that the investment would be utilized and beneficial for the residents of Bellaire.

Benny McCament, the mineral resources management chief for the AMLER Division, also spoke about the importance of the grant, which aims to utilize federal resources effectively for community revitalization. He explained that a key requirement for the funding is a connection to abandoned mine lands, something that resonates deeply with Bellaire’s history, as Belmont County was a significant coal producer in Ohio.

This new recreation and entertainment complex represents not just a physical development but also a revitalization of community spirit in Bellaire. As local leaders rally behind the project, residents can look forward to a new space that promotes health, wellness, and social engagement, connecting families and friends in an era where community bonds are more important than ever.
