You Won't Believe What's Coming: Bishop Kearney's $5 Million Fitness Center & Hockey Rink Set to Transform the Community!

Bishop Kearney High School, a Catholic institution located in Irondequoit, New York, is set to enhance its athletic offerings with the planning of a new state-of-the-art fitness center, which will include a regulation hockey rink. This announcement comes on the heels of an impressive showing at the recent Winter Olympics, where five alumnae from the school proudly earned gold representing the United States in women's hockey.

The ambitious project is projected to cost upwards of $10 million, although Paul Colontino, president of Bishop Kearney, has refrained from disclosing a precise figure due to varying estimates and phases of the plan. The new facility aims to open its doors by the 2027-2028 school year and will offer an impressive array of amenities, including an indoor turf for soccer training, a field house, and various fitness training equipment.

Colontino emphasized that while the timing of the announcement aligns conveniently with the Olympic triumph, the vision for the new facility has been in development for years. "This is about all of our students," he stated. "This is about how do we create the next step for BK in terms of its foundation, but also in terms of what it can offer all of our students here."

Participation in high school sports is currently at an all-time high, prompting schools across the nation to invest significantly in upgraded facilities. The new fitness center at Bishop Kearney is designed to serve not only the athletic programs but also the broader community. Colontino expressed a commitment to ensuring that the school meets the evolving needs of its families, who dedicate substantial time and effort to various extracurricular activities, from theater to athletics.

The recent Olympic win for the U.S. women's hockey team, which featured Bishop Kearney alum Laila Edwards as the most valuable player of the tournament, has shone a spotlight on the school's already notable hockey program. During the Olympics, the U.S. team defeated Canada 2-1 to secure the gold medal. Alongside Edwards, other alumnae such as Nina Christof and Julie Schiefer represented Germany, while Michaela Hesová played for Czechia, all having previously competed for the BK Selects hockey team.

Interestingly, during their time at Bishop Kearney, these hockey players did not have access to a rink at the school. Currently, the girls' hockey team practices at the Tim Horton's IcePlex, while the boys' team uses the Rochester Ice Center, both situated in nearby areas. The addition of a regulation rink on campus will not only enhance the training experience for current athletes but also signal a commitment to elevating the school's sports facilities.

Colontino envisions the new facility as a valuable asset for the entire community, stating, "It's a changing world out there, and the amount of time and effort that a lot of our families put into their passions... we want to make sure that they have the area, the technology, and the resources to achieve what they're trying to achieve.”
