You Won't Believe What Shreveport's Fit Fest is Offering—Free Fitness Events at Community Centers!

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - The annual Fit Fest, organized by Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR), transformed the Southern Hills Community Center into a vibrant hub of wellness this past Saturday. The event offered residents, including veterans and families, a unique opportunity to engage with local health resources and fitness activities—all for free.
Lead Superintendent Shalon Lewis emphasized the event’s mission: to foster community connections while making wellness resources accessible in one location. “It’s just an event to bring the community together as a whole,” Lewis stated. “We wanted to bring fitness as well as resources within one area, within one community.”
Activities and Resources Provided
Participants had the chance to enjoy a variety of activities such as a leisurely stroll in the park, line dancing, and “belly basics.” Attendees also learned about nutrition and connected with local support services. Organizers highlighted that the event aims to promote healthy habits that extend beyond just working out in the gym.
“This is my opportunity to get back to moving,” said attendee Karon Williams, who celebrated a personal milestone following knee replacement surgery. “It’s so important in our community.” Williams also appreciated the event's broader message about healthy living. “They always encourage healthy eating, too… not just moving, but also healthy eating, being involved in your community, taking care of the community,” she shared. “Southern Hills does a great job at this. So that’s why we continue to come.”
Another participant, Chequitha Chatman, echoed Williams’ sentiments, encouraging others to take part in future events. “You will want to come and join the group because it’s so encouraging, so inviting,” Chatman remarked.
