Secretly Distribution, an independent music distributor, has expanded its technological capabilities by acquiring Babel Ops, the company behind the music data and analytics platform Entertainment Intelligence (Ei). The announcement, made on April 8, marks a significant move within an industry increasingly dominated by major label conglomerates.

Founded in 2020 by Erik Gilbert and Greg Delaney, Babel Ops builds bespoke data management, analytics, and royalty processing tools designed specifically for independent music companies. The organization boasts a notable client roster, including Cargo Independent Distribution, Concord, and Reservoir Media. Babel Ops’ Enterlytics platform currently serves over 1.2 million artists across more than 55,000 labels, providing crucial insights that help independent labels navigate the industry's complexities.

The acquisition will allow Babel Ops to continue serving its existing clientele while integrating its innovative solutions into the broader offerings of Secretly Distribution. This move aligns with the vision articulated by Delaney and Gilbert, who stated, “We believe independence is something you actively build and protect, not something you inherit.”

In the context of current trends, Darius Van Arman, CEO of Secretly Distribution, highlighted the challenges posed by increasing market consolidation and technological concentration among the largest companies in the music industry. "The music industry is moving into a new era of market concentration and algorithmic control," he stated, emphasizing the importance of having access to market-leading technology for independent labels to compete effectively.

As part of the acquisition, two longtime database administrators from Secretly, Ember Wyrdt and Reggie Provine, will join the Babel Ops team.
