You Won't Believe What Hyderabad's SmartGreen Aquaculture Just Launched—India's First Trout Farming Project!

SmartGreen Aquaculture (SGA), a Hyderabad-based startup, has made waves in the Indian aquaculture industry by launching what is hailed as India’s first inland, premium trout farming facility. Located in Kandukur mandal of Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district, just outside of Hyderabad, this innovative facility has been established with an initial investment of $6 million (approximately Rs 54 crore). Utilizing advanced recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology, the facility aims to produce trout year-round in a controlled and biosecure environment.
The facility boasts a total production capacity of 1,200 metric tonnes per annum and is expected to create around 200 jobs. It includes a dedicated two-acre hatchery and an indoor grow-out system optimized for RAS, as well as on-site processing capabilities for value-added rainbow trout products. In addition, SGA has established cold-chain facilities and an online store to facilitate direct consumer deliveries. The company also plans to introduce a flexi-scale premium microalgae biorefinery and a skill center focused on RAS technology on the same campus.
During the inauguration of the first phase of this aquaculture farm and research institute, Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj, called SmartGreen Aquaculture a shining example of innovation within the country’s startup ecosystem. “SGA’s harnessing of advanced technology to farm cold-water fish in the warmer climate of a region like the Deccan Plateau is a remarkable feat,” he remarked, comparing it to “extracting oil from sand.” He emphasized that RAS technology significantly enhances production rates and enables the creation of high-value products with substantial export potential.
G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister of Mines, echoed these sentiments, pointing out that innovative projects such as SGA’s reflect the promising future of Indian aquaculture. He noted the geographical limitations that have historically bounded trout farming in India and underscored the facility's potential to cultivate specialized fish species in warmer inland regions.
At the helm of this ambitious project is Aditya Rithvik Narra, a 31-year-old engineer turned aquaculture entrepreneur. As the founder and managing director of SmartGreen Aquaculture, he articulated the vision behind the facility: “By integrating hatcheries, farming, processing, and e-commerce under one roof, we are reducing dependence on imports and intermediaries.” This comprehensive approach not only aims to meet domestic demand but also aspires to position India as a competitive player in the global aquaculture market.
