ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Chapter of the Links, Inc. hosted the third annual Black Family Wellness Expo on the Albany State University West Campus. This event brought together 15 health providers and vendors from the Albany and Dougherty County area to inform the public about a range of health services, from preventive medicine to chronic illness management.

“And that’s what it’s all about—so that families can take this information home with them, put it to use and get the results such that they improve their healthcare,” said Dr. Marsha Glover, a pediatrician involved in the expo. The event not only served as an educational platform but also introduced families to healthcare professionals within their community.

“We have doctors here—doctors who live in the community, from the community, telling you how they care for you with your chronic illness and telling you how to prevent these chronic illnesses,” noted Dr. Dianna Grant-Burke, a retired chief medical officer with Phoebe Putney Health System. This aspect of the expo is fundamental, as it fosters familiarity and trust between healthcare providers and families who may face barriers in accessing medical aid.

In addition to healthcare insights, a local chef led cooking demonstrations, focusing on how to purchase affordable food items and prepare healthy meals for families. This holistic approach to wellness emphasizes that health encompasses not just medical care, but also nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Members of the Albany Links, Inc. expressed their commitment to expanding the event in future years. They believe that while the expo addresses healthcare disparities in the community, it also promotes a sense of unity, highlighting that South Georgians are one large family. “Everyone is always welcomed at the health expo,” they stated, reinforcing the open, inclusive atmosphere they aim to foster.

The Black Family Wellness Expo is not just an event; it’s part of a growing movement to empower communities through education and direct access to healthcare resources. By connecting residents with local physicians and offering practical advice on nutrition and wellness, the expo plays a crucial role in improving health outcomes in Albany and surrounding areas.

As the event continues to grow, it may serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country, particularly in areas where healthcare access is limited. Efforts like these not only educate but also build community resilience, ultimately leading to healthier families and neighborhoods.
