You Won't Believe What Happened When Janelle James Turned CSU's RamFest into a Hilarious Comedy Show!

On April 2, Colorado State University (CSU) welcomed award-winning actress and comedian Janelle James to the Lory Student Center Ballrooms for an evening filled with laughter and community. This comedy show was part of CSU's annual RamFest, an event designed to bring students and faculty together in a relaxed atmosphere, providing a much-needed break in the hectic stretch between spring break and summer.
James, widely recognized for her role as Principal Ava Coleman on the hit television show “Abbott Elementary,” which has garnered her four Emmy nominations, headlined the event in front of an audience of approximately 1,600 attendees. Alongside her was opening act Ontonio Kareem, whose comedic set included humorous takes on his experiences in dating and his previous career as a therapist.
The timing of RamFest, falling just after spring break, creates a perfect opportunity for students and faculty alike to unwind. Alicia Valencia, president of RamEvents, emphasized that the event serves as a much-needed pause. “It bridges the gap that is spring break until the end of the year, which can feel like a long and daunting time,” said Kennedy Lewallen, RamEvents finance coordinator. This sentiment was echoed by attendees seeking comedic relief during what can often be a stressful period in the academic calendar.
Comedy is often a medium that tackles taboo subjects with honesty, and Janelle James did not shy away from this tradition. “Comedy shows can be so much more personal; they address real problems and real scenarios that are going on in everybody’s life right now,” Valencia noted, highlighting how humor can transform potentially dark topics into relatable content. Unlike concerts that provide entertainment without the opportunity for reflection, comedy allows audiences to engage with and process their own experiences in a light-hearted way.
Last year's comedy show featuring Marcello Hernandez was a notable success, and the positive feedback from the community indicated a strong desire for similar events. “Comedy especially brought light to the campus in the midst of hard times both socially and politically,” Lewallen explained, showcasing the role of humor in fostering connection and resilience.
During her performance, James navigated a range of topics including GLP-1 inhibitors, dating, and the ups and downs of newfound fame. Her humor resonated with the audience, prompting both laughter and moments of contemplation. James concluded her set with an interactive open mic session, engaging with the audience by answering questions about her life and her character Ava, solidifying her connection with fans.
Kareem’s opening act was equally well-received, with attendees appreciating his relatable anecdotes about navigating life transitions, from dating challenges to career changes. “His act was really funny; I know I was laughing and my friends were laughing, and it didn’t feel like his act was any less than Janelle’s act,” Lewallen remarked. Kareem's ability to tailor his performance toward the college demographic made it particularly relevant and engaging.
The event also provided a platform for CSU President Amy Parsons, special faculty, and friends and family of James to mingle with the comedian before the show. This personal touch further enhanced the community-oriented spirit of RamFest.
RamFest has evolved over the years, transitioning from carnivals to concerts and now incorporating comedy. Valencia noted that when they surveyed students about their preferred festivities, comedy emerged as a clear favorite, blending enjoyment with a sense of relaxation. As CSU continues to prioritize events that foster community, it’s evident that a good laugh can serve as a powerful connector during challenging times.
For those looking for a break amidst the pressures of academia, events like RamFest remind us of the importance of humor and shared experiences. As Janelle James demonstrated, laughter can provide not just a moment of escape, but also a chance to confront life's complexities with a lighter heart.
