You Won't Believe What Happened When 1,000 Swindon Residents Watched This Climate Change Film!

A recent climate change film, "People’s Emergency Briefing," presented by renowned TV naturalist Chris Packham, attracted a supportive audience of 75 at Christ Church Swindon on Monday, April 27. The event was organized by the church’s Eco Group, motivated by member John Pryce, and underscores a growing commitment within the community to tackle environmental issues.
This screening is part of a broader initiative across the UK aimed at raising awareness about climate and nature emergencies. It follows the National Emergency Briefing held last November at Westminster Central Hall and features insights from leading UK academics, economists, and a senior armed forces general. The film is designed to rally public support for a televised government-backed emergency briefing on climate change, emphasizing the urgency of the crisis.
In addition to the church’s involvement, various local organizations rallied behind the event, including members from other church Eco groups in the Swindon area, the Swindon Climate Action Network, the Religious Society of Friends, and the Wiltshire Climate Alliance. This collaboration highlights a unique intersection of faith communities and environmental organizations as they unite to confront the climate crisis together.
The film delves deep into the myriad effects of climate change, addressing critical areas such as food security, energy systems, economic stability, public health, and national security. It also presents actionable steps that individuals and communities can take, such as reducing food waste, adopting more plant-based diets, decreasing energy consumption in homes and transportation, and supporting flood mitigation efforts.
After the film screening, attendees participated in one of seven discussion groups to reflect on the messages presented and brainstorm practical local responses. Facilitators from each group shared key points from their discussions, fostering a sense of communal purpose and collaborative action among participants.
Daniel Pitt, another member of the Christ Church Eco Group, expressed gratitude for the support received in organizing the event and was pleased with the turnout. He remarked, "While the crisis is daunting, I was encouraged by the amount of goodwill and commitment there is for efforts to mitigate and adapt to the crisis. It’s clear that much already goes on locally, and we need to work together, including supporting and encouraging our local leaders."
The church's commitment to environmental stewardship has been recognized with the A Rocha Gold Award, further emphasizing its role in the community's eco-initiatives. For those interested in ongoing discussions about climate action, additional information about screenings of "People’s Emergency Briefing" can be found at the National Emergency Briefing website: https://www.nebriefing.org/the-film.
Moreover, the upcoming Swindon Churches Green Festival, scheduled for June 6–14, invites further community engagement with eco-friendly initiatives. Information can be accessed through the Christ Church Eco Group's page: christchurchswindon.co.uk/blog/eco-church.
This event and the film serve as important reminders of the collective action needed to address climate change, encouraging local communities to not only acknowledge the crisis but also actively participate in solutions. The support shown at the screening in Swindon reflects a burgeoning awareness and readiness to tackle these pressing environmental challenges head-on.
