You Won't Believe What Baton Rouge is Offering: Free Vaccines, Hidden Art Treasures, and a Shocking Strawberry Market!

The vibrant creativity of young artists will take center stage in Baton Rouge as the Knock Knock Children’s Museum and East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPS) unveil the “Big Ideas, Little Hands: EBR Schools’ K-5 Masterpieces” exhibition. From March 31 through April 12, this showcase will feature an impressive collection of artwork created by elementary students across the district, highlighting the imaginative spirit of children in grades K-5.

This exhibition not only offers a platform for young artists to present their masterpieces but also serves as a celebration of creativity and talent within the community. With interactive elements and engaging presentations, families are encouraged to experience the joys of art through the eyes of these budding creators. The exhibition promises to be a visual feast, showcasing the unique perspectives and imaginations of the district's youngest students.

In addition to artistic pursuits, the community will have another reason to celebrate on April 4, when the Red Stick Farmers Market hosts its annual “Strawberry Jam” event from 8 a.m. to noon at 5th and Main Street. This lively gathering features family-friendly activities, live music, and cooking demonstrations, all centered around the deliciousness of locally grown strawberries.

The event's highlight will include a special appearance by Jazzy the Strawberry, the jovial “spokesberry” for the Louisiana Strawberry Marketing Board, who will spread cheer among visitors throughout the morning. Additionally, local restaurateur and sommelier Scott Higgins will conduct a cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. in the Teaching Kitchen inside Main Street Market, showcasing creative ways to incorporate fresh Louisiana strawberries into meals.

Local farmers and food artisans will also offer a delightful array of strawberry products, including fresh berries, jams, jellies, pies, and pastries. Among the vendors participating are:

  • Bonnecaze Farms: strawberry jam
  • City Gelato: strawberry gelato
  • Corona Farms: strawberries and strawberry jam
  • Frank Fekete Farm: strawberries
  • Herb n’ Bros: “Stress Less” juice
  • Mizell Farms: strawberry plants
  • Morrow Farms: strawberries
  • Supper Solutions LLC: strawberry squares

For pet owners, there’s also a valuable opportunity to ensure their furry friends are healthy. On April 11, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Companion Animal Alliance will provide free vaccinations for pets at the Charles R. Kelly Community Center, located at 3535 Riley St.. This initiative is made possible through Petco Love's national vaccination program, “Vaccinated and Loved,” which has already provided over 4 million free pet vaccines across the country.

At the clinic, pet owners can receive the DAPPv Canine and HCP Feline vaccines, with an aim to vaccinate 200 pets during the event. The drive-through clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no qualification requirements needed for the free vaccines. Additionally, rabies vaccinations and information on free spay/neuter services will be available.

This clinic will be the first of its kind, with a follow-up event scheduled for May 2 at the Dr. Leo Butler Community Center at 950 Lorri Burgess Ave. For more information about the vaccination distributions, you can contact Companion Animal Alliance at (225) 408-5360 or email [email protected].
