You Won't Believe the SHOCKING Twist on MSU's Senior Night Victory – Fans Are FURIOUS!
On a night filled with nostalgia and excitement, the Michigan State Spartans faced off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, aiming to improve their impressive season record to 25-5. It was Senior Night at the Breslin Center, and the atmosphere was electric as Jaxon Kohler, Carson Cooper, Trey Fort, and Denham Wojcik prepared to play their final home game, kissing the logo on the court before tip-off.
With the rivalry game against Michigan looming, the Spartans had to be wary of a Rutgers team that had previously pushed them to overtime earlier in the season. Spartan fans eagerly anticipated how their team would perform in this crucial matchup.
First Half
The game began with Rutgers surprising the Spartans, jumping out to an 8-6 lead within the first five minutes, bolstered by two early three-pointers. Social media lit up with reactions, as fans were taken aback by Rutgers' strong start. "Don’t say it bro… don’t say it……Rutgers is HOT," tweeted Jack, capturing the sentiment of many.
Michigan State's Coen Carr quickly made a mark on the game, showcasing his offensive prowess and going a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. However, the Spartans struggled offensively, committing four turnovers in the first ten minutes as Rutgers maintained a narrow 12-9 lead. Frustrated fans took to Twitter, with one commenting, "We’re playing one of the worst teams on offense in the conference, so of course MSU would start out sloppy and slow 🙃."
Despite the rocky start, Michigan State rallied, going on a 7-0 run and taking a 16-12 lead thanks to strong plays from Kohler and Cam Ward. But Rutgers responded aggressively, utilizing excellent defense to force seven turnovers and regain the lead at 21-20, capped by a three-pointer from Tariq Francis. As the half progressed, Michigan State seemed to be struggling to find its rhythm. "Truly a wtf effort so far today for MSU," tweeted John, capturing the frustration of the fans.
As the half drew to a close, Coen Carr scored the last four points, leading Michigan State to a slim 31-30 advantage going into halftime. Jacob Cotsonika tweeted, "Well, that was a pretty bad half for the Spartans, but they're still up at the break," reflecting the mixed feelings among Spartan supporters.
Second Half
The second half began with Michigan State showing renewed energy, launching a 7-0 run that forced Rutgers to call a timeout. The Spartans appeared to regain control, with Jeremy Fears showcasing his playmaking ability and connecting on three consecutive alley-oops to Coen Carr. In doing so, he passed Magic Johnson to become third in all-time assists for a single season at Michigan State, with a total of 270. Fears now trails only Mateen Cleaves and Cassius Winston in this prestigious category. "JEREMY FEARS 3 LOBS TO COEN IN A ROW TO BREAK MAGICS RECORD," tweeted Jeremy Fears III, celebrating his teammate's achievement.
However, mid-game tensions flared as Jeremy Fears received a technical foul, allowing Rutgers to capitalize and make a five-point swing. This led to Denham Wojcik stepping in to handle point guard duties as Fears battled foul trouble, with the Spartans still comfortably ahead at 71-54 at the third media timeout.
Yet, Michigan State's defensive lapses allowed Rutgers to make a late-game push, cutting the Spartans' lead down to just 12 points with under four minutes remaining. Coach Tom Izzo, visibly frustrated, called a timeout to regroup his team. "Tom Izzo is definitely not happy, perhaps trying to remain up by enough to give all the seniors a proper send-off," tweeted Cotsonika.
Following Izzo's timeout, Michigan State managed to regain momentum, quickly scoring four points. The Spartans subsequently allowed their five seniors to take the court together for the last time at Breslin Center. As excitement filled the arena, Rutgers tried to make a late-game comeback, hitting a three-pointer, then stealing an inbound pass for another three, narrowing the Spartans' lead to just eight points.
With the game on the line, Trey Fort was fouled and made both free throws, but Rutgers continued to fight back, making another three-pointer and forcing Izzo to reinsert his starters to secure the win. In a dramatic finish, Jeremy Fears hit two final free throws, sealing the game at 91-87.
With the victory, Michigan State improved to 25-5 on the season, maintaining their strong performance as they look ahead to the upcoming rivalry game against Michigan. Spartan supporters breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that their team had not only given their seniors a memorable send-off but also kept their championship aspirations alive.
