Thursday afternoon, after a lively media session at Viejas Arena, Perkins attempted to take home a nameplate emblazoned with the March Madness logo, only to be reminded that it wasn't yet his to keep. Undeterred, he snapped a photo of it, marking the significance of this return to the tournament.

The Villanova Wildcats (24-8) are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022 and are set to face the ninth-seeded Utah State on Friday at 4:10 p.m. on TNT. A win could set them up for a challenging matchup against top-seeded Arizona on Sunday. Last year was a different story, marked by turmoil. Perkins’ coach, Kyle Neptune, was dismissed, leaving the team eyeing different leadership options.

“That’s a lot different than the tournament, March Madness,” Perkins stated. “I’m just glad that we’re in it, but we still have more work to do, more games to play.” His optimism is backed by a strong performance, which has been pivotal in getting Villanova back into the tournament fold.

Perkins has transformed his game since last season, where he averaged just 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over 25.8 minutes per game. Under Coach Willard's guidance, Perkins has emerged as a key player, one whose experience in the Big East was deemed vital as the roster faced a significant overhaul.

“There was no one on the roster that had played in the Big East,” Willard explained. “So it was kind of important to me to keep someone that knew the league and kind of knew what was going on. I just told him that he was going to be a big part of what we’re going to try to build.” Perkins took this to heart.

“When I had my talks with Coach Willard and he told me about what his plan was and what his vision was, I believed in it,” Perkins shared. His faith in the new direction has proven fruitful, particularly as he has rediscovered his form, averaging 18 points and 6.8 rebounds during a crucial six-game win streak that followed a tough loss to UConn.

Perkins' ability to hit timely shots, make crucial rebounds, and serve as a defensive anchor has brought Villanova stability amidst their challenges. Freshman guard Acaden Lewis described Perkins as a calming presence. “Tyler’s been great for me and just the whole team in general,” Lewis stated. “I think he’s done a great job of keeping us mellow in a lot of games and he’s always just a voice, something that you hear.” Perkins’ evolution from a three-star recruit to a leader on a tournament-bound team is a testament to his hard work and resilience.

His family encouraged him to remain levelheaded, reinforcing the idea that perseverance pays off. “It just shows that if you stay with it and you don’t give up and you stay levelheaded, it’ll all work out,” he said.
