CULLMAN, Ala. – A new strength and fitness class at Cullman First Baptist Church is making strides to enhance the health and well-being of local seniors. The initiative, spearheaded by Jeanne Madara, aims to improve balance, build strength, and foster connections among participants.
Madara was inspired to start this class after she experienced a fall in the church parking lot last year. At 62 years old, she recognized the importance of maintaining physical health as one ages. “I am 62, and I realized as we age, our balance and strength leaves us if we don’t use it consistently,” Madara stated. Her fall opened her eyes to a larger issue within the church community, revealing that many others faced similar challenges.
In her capacity as the coordinator for the church's senior group, known as Seasoned Saints, Madara took the initiative to launch the fitness class to help individuals regain their strength and stability. The group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in a designated space located on the north side of the church's lower level. Each session begins with around 15 minutes of balance exercises utilizing chairs, followed by approximately 30 minutes of seated strength training.
The workouts are guided by online instructors projected on a large screen, allowing participants to proceed at their own pace. This flexible format is particularly accommodating, as it welcomes individuals of all fitness levels. Madara noted that some participants are recovering from surgeries, such as knee or shoulder operations, and find the class beneficial alongside their physical therapy routines. “My goal was encouragement and accountability,” she said. “Anyone can do this at home, but we all agreed that we just don’t do it at home.”
Though the class is still in its early stages, Madara expressed optimism about its potential for growth. There are plans to transition to a larger room if the demand increases. As it stands, participants have already noted that the class has not only contributed to their physical health but has also fostered friendships and a sense of community. “We truly have a good time,” Madara shared. “We feel encouraged by each other and we have made new friends.”
