Anderson Miller (AM): What’s been the best part of your sophomore year so far?
Pedro Espinoza (PE): I think the best part of the year is experiencing new classes that were available and being able to choose.
AM: What’s something that’s been challenging for you recently, in or out of school?
PE: I’ve really had to work on balancing sports and academics this year.
As he adjusts to the demands of being a student-athlete, Espinoza's commitment to both academics and athletics is commendable. His dedication is particularly evident in his decision to join the soccer team.
AM: What made you want to play soccer at Latin?
PE: I’ve always liked the sport and found it fun to watch. Then, once my friends started playing, I did too.
This camaraderie and shared interest in soccer not only fueled his passion but also enhanced his experience at Latin. A standout moment for him was scoring a penalty kick in a game, a personal highlight that underscores the thrill of competition.
AM: What’s a moment from soccer at Latin that stands out to you?
PE: Scoring a penalty kick in a game.
Espinoza’s typical weekday reflects the reality of many students who juggle rigorous schedules. With sports practices and academic responsibilities, time management becomes crucial.
AM: What’s your usual weekday like, balancing school, homework, and activities?
PE: I usually try to finish all my homework during free periods because I don’t have time after school to do it with sports, and it takes a while to get home.
This strategy highlights the importance of utilizing every available moment, a skill that many students must cultivate to succeed. Through this process, Espinoza has also discovered more about himself.
AM: What’s something you’ve learned about yourself this year?
PE: How well I can manage my time, because I didn’t know that before, and I honestly never had to do it.
In addition to soccer, this year marked Espinoza’s foray into volleyball. Initially, he joined the team to earn credit, but he soon found joy in the sport and formed new friendships.
AM: What made you decide to start playing volleyball this year?
PE: First, I needed the credit, but once I started playing, I had a ton of fun and started making friends on the team.
His experience in volleyball has also provided unexpected lessons in teamwork. The sport demands effective communication among teammates, a contrast to the dynamics of soccer.
AM: What surprised you most about volleyball compared to soccer?
PE: You need to have great communication in volleyball, and you need more teamwork.
When not attending to his academic and athletic commitments, Espinoza envisions spending time with friends, enjoying leisurely activities at the park.
AM: If you had a completely free day off, what would you do?
PE: Probably go to the park with my friends and play some sports all day.
This desire for connection and play is vital for maintaining balance and mental well-being amid a busy schedule. Reflecting on his aspirations, Espinoza expressed an interest in teaching.
AM: If you were a teacher at Latin, what class would you want to teach, and why?
PE: Physics, because it’s pretty interesting, and I feel like students would be interested in the class.
As he looks ahead, Espinoza has set personal goals for himself, emphasizing the importance of maintaining his connections and time management skills.
AM: What’s a goal you have for yourself going forward?
PE: I want to keep managing my time well and stay connected with my friends.
