You Won't Believe How Former Illinois Stars Transformed Timberwolves' Playoff Hopes Overnight!

Since Brad Underwood took the helm at the University of Illinois, the city of Champaign has evolved into a burgeoning hub for NBA talent. The Illinois Fighting Illini have not only produced a notable number of players who have transitioned to the professional ranks, but they have also emphasized quality alongside quantity.
By happenstance, two standout alums, Ayo Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr., have found themselves on the same roster with the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, the similarities in their playing styles initially led to a challenge: they have been competing for minutes on the court, making it difficult for both to shine simultaneously.
That dynamic changed dramatically when star guard Anthony Edwards was sidelined due to injury. This provided both Dosunmu and Shannon with a golden opportunity to showcase their talents. After being traded to Minnesota from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline in February, Dosunmu found his rhythm, but it was during the playoffs that he truly emerged as a force.
Ayo Dosunmu Shines in the Playoffs
In Game 3 of the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets, Dosunmu exploded onto the scene, scoring 25 points on a remarkable 10-for-15 shooting performance, paired with nine assists. This performance not only propelled the Timberwolves to a victory but also gave them a 2-1 lead in the series.
That was just a glimpse of what was to come. In the following game, Dosunmu came off the bench and lit up the scoreboard for a staggering 43 points, shooting an efficient 13-for-17 from the field and going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. His back-to-back high-scoring games resulted in a total of 68 points over Games 3 and 4, helping the Timberwolves to a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. This performance marked a significant milestone as he became the first player since Steph Curry in 2016 to score over 40 points off the bench in the NBA playoffs.

In Game 5, Dosunmu earned a starting position but was limited to 18 points, due to the help from Shannon, who contributed 15 points in just 14 minutes. Unfortunately, a calf injury would sideline Dosunmu for the crucial Game 6, raising the stakes for Shannon to step up.
Terrence Shannon Jr. Takes the Spotlight
Despite having played only 21 minutes in the series prior to Game 6, Shannon was given his first career playoff start. He made the most of the opportunity, logging 38 minutes on the court and finishing the game with 24 points and six rebounds, leading the Timberwolves to close out the Nuggets and advance to the second round, where they will face the San Antonio Spurs.
Although Shannon struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 1-for-7, he made significant contributions near the rim, utilizing his remarkable speed and agility to finish strong through contact. He added to his scoring with a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Shannon, who spent much of the first few games on the bench, proved to be one of the Timberwolves' essential players in the clutch moments of Game 6. Following the game, he mentioned his approach: “Just be ready when my name [is] called. And got to perform.” His teammate Jaden McDaniels affirmed this, stating, “He’s been ready since he got in the league.”
As both Dosunmu and Shannon continue to navigate the challenges of the playoffs, their journey reflects not only their individual talents but also the rising prominence of Illinois basketball on the national stage. With the Timberwolves advancing further into the postseason, fans will be eagerly watching how these two former Illini will shape their team’s success.
