You Won't Believe How Don Turner Changed Basketball Forever—And It Didn't Happen in the NBA!

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The story of Don Turner is one of resilience, dedication, and a lasting impact on countless students throughout his 32 years at Most Pure Heart of Mary School in Topeka. A former basketball standout who trained with the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, Turner was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors in 1963. However, a hamstring injury abruptly sidelined his dream of making it in the NBA.
Instead of leaving the world of sports for good, Turner channeled his passion into education, nurturing young minds and shaping futures in the gymnasium he would later call home. On Tuesday, Most Pure Heart honored him by naming their gym the Don Turner Gymnasium, a fitting tribute to a man who has been described as the cornerstone of the school community.
“I was proud of Most Pure Heart,” Turner shared during a sit-down interview with 13 SPORTS. “I could have gone anywhere I wanted to. I thought about being a principal or something; I was just happy with what I did.” For Turner, the gym wasn’t merely a place for physical activity; it was a space where every student felt welcomed and encouraged to thrive.
Reflecting on his time, Turner recalled, “I must’ve done something right. I always felt that way. I always went above and beyond with what I did. I guess the Lord answered it.” For many former students, the gym was Turner’s “kingdom,” a place where his influence resonated profoundly. “When we found out that Most Pure Heart was renovating the gymnasium, I think for all of us who had him as our teacher, we thought he was the obvious choice,” said Mark Thompson, a Most Pure Heart alum.
Turner’s philosophy of education was clear even before he joined Most Pure Heart in 1969. “Mr. Lorson, he said, ‘What’s your philosophy?’ I said, ‘I want to give these kids a well-rounded education,’” he recounted. Although proud of his basketball accomplishments, he emphasized humility, remembering the advice from his father: “Don’t let it go to your head. Let people brag on you; you don’t do the bragging.”
In the days leading up to the gym's renaming, former students shared countless stories of how Turner made a difference in their lives. “He was constantly looking for new ways to get students involved,” said Charlie Applehanz, another alum. “New games, he taught us how to do the Hustle. He taught us square dancing. He was one of the people who brought Field Day to Most Pure Heart.”
Even the Golden State Warriors took note of Turner’s achievements. Former student Rob Reilly reached out to the team, which sent congratulations in a message from Mike Dunleavy, their General Manager. “As a former Warrior draft pick to another former Warrior draft pick, I wanted to congratulate you on a great career as an educator and your most recent accolade having the gymnasium named after you,” the message read. “So, we got Coach K court, Phog Allen Fieldhouse, and now Don Turner Gym, pretty impressive, that’s good company.”
While Turner remained modest about his accomplishments, the Bobcats community is proud to celebrate his legacy. The newly named Don Turner Gymnasium not only honors Turner’s contributions but also signifies a commitment to ensuring that his impact will resonate across generations.
Tuesday’s event was not merely a celebration of Turner’s legacy; it also marked the beginning of significant renovations for the gymnasium itself. Most Pure Heart is launching a $500,000 fundraising effort to update the space. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the past two years of the Five Hearts Gala “Fund-the-Need” have already raised $61,000, which will enable the school to begin replacing the gym’s aging glass block windows in summer 2026.
Anticipated improvements with the $500,000 goal include:
- Add air conditioning to the gymnasium
- Replace glass blocks with new windows
- Upgrade the bleacher system on the north wall
- Repair the ceiling insulation
- If the goal is reached, additional funds will go toward stage improvements, potentially including stage lighting and a movable wall
In honoring Don Turner, Most Pure Heart not only acknowledges a remarkable educator but also demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the environment where future generations of students will learn and grow. The legacy of Don Turner will undoubtedly continue to inspire, proving that a true educator's impact extends far beyond the classroom.
