MOBILE, Ala. — In an effort to inspire the next generation of maritime professionals, hundreds of students from Mobile and Baldwin County are participating in the inaugural Maritime Career Discovery Day at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. This event aims to shed light on career opportunities within the maritime industry, an essential sector for the region's economy.

As students pour into the exhibit halls, they are exposed to various job possibilities that could shape their futures. Among them is 11th grader Javier Rodriguez, who expressed enthusiasm about the lifestyle associated with maritime careers. “Pay’s good but I don’t want that as the only reason. But the lifestyle seems pretty cool. Traveling, seeing the world just working on the water,” he said. His sentiment reflects a growing interest among young people in careers that offer both financial stability and adventure.

Another student, Xavier Tolbert from BC Rain High School, noted, “There are jobs, careers here, and you can work on the water.” While many young people are drawn to fields like artificial intelligence, software development, or becoming social media influencers, city officials are actively working to redirect some of that interest toward maritime trades, which offer promising career paths.

Amanda Frazier from Master Boat Builders highlighted the accessibility of these careers, explaining, “You could go straight out of high school. It’s good training. You need to learn a little bit about welding and go to training programs like ADT or the training programs that are in your high school. And you can start out and start working straight out of high school.” This pathway is particularly appealing to students uncertain about their post-graduation plans, providing them with clear next steps.

The significance of maritime jobs cannot be overstated. As Karen Poth, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum, pointed out, many young people may not realize the extensive range of careers that are involved in making maritime operations successful. “The fun thing for us is to watch a big cargo ship go by and say, hey, have you thought about all the jobs that made that thing happen? There’s engineers, there are people who build it, there are welders, there are logistics people who’re up there making sure that ship doesn’t crash into another one as it’s going down our river,” she said.

The Maritime Career Discovery Day is hosting around 800 students, most of whom hail from local schools. They are learning about essential job requirements, necessary skills, potential salaries, and benefits associated with maritime careers. This is a crucial step in ensuring the region has a well-trained workforce to meet the demands of the maritime industry, which plays a vital role in the local economy.
