Why a $100,000 Donation from Vulcan Materials is Transforming the Fred Corriher YMCA – Don't Miss This!

As American soccer continues to gain popularity, a significant contribution from Vulcan Materials Company has addressed a pressing need for the J. Fred Corriher South Rowan YMCA in Landis, North Carolina. The donation has resulted in the creation of new parking spaces, alleviating congestion during the busy Saturday morning soccer games that have become a staple for families in the community.
On any given Saturday, the YMCA fields are bustling with activity as children compete in various age divisions ranging from under 4 to under 14. With approximately 295 kids participating in spring soccer, the demand for parking has skyrocketed, leading to overcrowded lots that extend beyond the YMCA’s facilities and into the nearby Frank Tadlock Library lot. According to YMCA Executive Director Aaron Crowe, the situation was critical: “At any given time, we had 200-250 vehicles looking for space. People were parking anywhere they could find room.”
In an effort to combat this issue, Crowe enlisted the help of Vulcan Materials, a company he had previously collaborated with on various projects. Denise Hallett, the company’s Community and Government Relations Manager, facilitated the donation of 200 tons of non-sized crusher run gravel, which was crucial for expanding the parking area. The gravel was produced at Vulcan’s Kannapolis plant, demonstrating the company’s commitment to local community support.
To prepare the site, Crowe faced the challenging decision to remove ten large gum and oak trees. A contractor was secured to handle the tree removal, and local farmer Robert Miller generously donated fill dirt to level the ground. This teamwork culminated in a new parking area that would provide much-needed relief during soccer season.
Spring soccer at the South YMCA has seen considerable growth, and Crowe anticipates even more participants as new home construction projects continue to emerge in the area. “We have the smallest service area of all the nearby YMCAs,” said South YMCA Sports Director Carvie Kepley, “but our program participants number the most.” The improved parking situation is expected to accommodate the increasing number of families attending games.
As the new parking area was completed just in time for the spring soccer practices, it proved to be a success during the opening game days on April 9 and April 11. Kepley noted that the new spaces were quickly filled, stating, “I noticed that instead of treating this lot as additional parking, it became the primary parking area and was first filled.”
Crowe expressed gratitude to all involved in the project, highlighting the importance of community partnerships in addressing local needs. “I love it when a plan comes together and this one certainly has,” he said.
Vulcan Materials' commitment to supporting local organizations is evident in their long-standing practice of giving back. Hallett emphasized, “Giving back to organizations like the YMCA is a core part of our corporate mission. When we help those who serve our neighbors, we all benefit.”
This collaboration not only strengthens community ties but also sets a precedent for future projects aimed at enhancing local facilities and services. With the soccer boom in full swing in Landis, the new parking area is just one example of how corporate generosity can significantly impact community infrastructure and quality of life.
