UW Men’s Soccer Stuns the Nation with a Last-Minute Goal—You Won't Believe How They Did It!

The Washington Huskies made history on Tuesday night by clinching the program's first-ever NCAA men’s soccer national championship, triumphing over the #15 North Carolina State Wolfpack with a thrilling 3-2 victory in overtime. This win marks a significant milestone for the Huskies, who had to navigate a challenging road to the title, winning six consecutive matches away from home, including the final held in Cary, North Carolina—less than 20 miles from NC State’s campus.
Washington opened the scoring just before halftime when an NC State goalkeeper misjudged a play. A Huskies player intercepted the ball just outside the box, leading to a fortunate deflection to Zach Ramsey, who capitalized on the opportunity and fired it into the net, putting Washington ahead 1-0 with less than 90 seconds left in the first half.
In the second half, the Huskies extended their lead to 2-0, thanks to a well-orchestrated play by Richie Aman. Despite appearing to be pushed wide, Aman skillfully crossed the ball into the box just as he was being forced out of bounds. Joe Dale made a perfectly timed run, cutting in front of two NC State defenders to score with a deft touch. With less than 30 minutes remaining, Washington seemed to be in a commanding position.
However, the Wolfpack responded aggressively, quickly cutting the deficit to 2-1. They dominated possession and generated relentless pressure, culminating in a well-executed strike with just three minutes left, forcing the game into overtime and igniting the home crowd’s excitement.
In the overtime period, Washington seized the moment. Harrison Bertos found the net just two minutes in, assisted by Egor Akulov, clinching the championship for the Huskies. The celebration was momentarily paused as officials reviewed the play for a possible offsides call, but the goal was ultimately confirmed, solidifying Washington's historic victory.
This championship win not only represents the first official NCAA men’s title in Washington's history but also serves as a significant redemption for head coach Jamie Clark. He previously led the Huskies to the title game in 2021, where they fell short against Clemson.
Washington's journey through the tournament was nothing short of impressive. They began with a 3-2 double-overtime victory against Oregon State, avenging an earlier season loss. The Huskies followed that with an upset win over #5 SMU, and then a 1-0 victory against #12 Stanford in the Sweet 16. They dominated #4 Maryland 3-1 in the Elite 8, which also avenged another earlier loss that affected the regular season Big Ten title. Finally, they secured their spot in the championship match with a 3-1 win over #16 Furman. Remarkably, all five of these victories came against top 16 teams, without any matches needing to go to penalty kicks.
Fans eager to celebrate the team's achievement can greet them upon their return home tomorrow at 3:30 PM PT at Husky Stadium.
