Unlock Your Heart's Secrets: This New Series Reveals 90% of Americans Are at Risk—Are You?

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - A new free educational series focused on heart health is set to kick off Thursday, February 19, as part of the observance of Heart Month. However, Curtis Mattson, the Administrative Director of Cardiovascular Services at CoxHealth, emphasizes that heart health is a year-round priority, making this event just one of many efforts aimed at promoting cardiovascular well-being.

The inaugural session will center on blood pressure, including an exploration of what the numbers mean and strategies for maintaining them within a healthy range. “The idea is to create an actionable event,” said Mattson. “Not just being talked at, but something where people can engage with the physician, something where people can learn some skills they can take home with them, whether it’s learning how to check blood pressure correctly or learning what a heart-healthy diet is.”

Mattson further highlighted the event's goal: “There are lots of things we can learn that make our everyday decisions better, and that’s really the goal of prevention.” Throughout the session, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a diverse group of speakers, including physicians, emergency service professionals, and individuals who have faced health challenges themselves.

“There’s an idea I think sometimes in health care that it’s individual struggles that people go through,” added Mattson. “Certainly, everyone has their own lived experience, but I think there’s strength in understanding that we’re all going through health together.” This shared experience, he believes, can empower individuals, helping them realize they are not alone in their struggles.

Doctors often note that much of their care can be reactionary, addressing issues only as they arise. By focusing on prevention and education, the hope is to significantly enhance community health. “It’s really important to understand that having knowledge is power,” said Mattson. “If we wait until something is a problem, it’s hard to be at a point where we’re ready to learn.”

The upcoming blood pressure community education event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Homewood Suites on S. National. Although sign-ups are recommended, they are not mandatory. Those interested can reach out via email at [email protected] to confirm their attendance.

As heart disease remains a leading health concern in the United States, events like this are crucial. The American Heart Association emphasizes that nearly 697,000 Americans die from heart disease each year, making education and awareness essential for prevention and management. Programs such as the one launched by CoxHealth not only work to educate the public but also aim to foster a supportive community where individuals can share experiences and find solace in understanding they are not alone in their health journeys.

In summary, this educational series embodies a proactive approach to health, advocating for informed decisions that can lead to lasting improvements in heart health. Such initiatives exemplify a critical shift from reactionary care to a culture of prevention and empowerment, aligning with broader health objectives within the community.
