Recent research from the Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands has revealed that consuming peanuts can improve vascular function in the brain and enhance memory, particularly in older adults. The findings, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, suggest that this affordable powerhouse, rich in protein and healthy fats, offers a delicious way to support cognitive function while potentially warding off age-related decline.

The study involved 31 healthy older adults aged 60 to 75, who consumed 60 grams (approximately two servings) of unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts daily for 16 weeks. Participants could choose to eat their peanuts all at once or spread them throughout the day, integrating them into meals as they saw fit. Researchers were surprised by the test results measuring brain function; they found that global cerebral blood flow (CBF) increased by 3.6%, and verbal memory improved by 5.8%. Additionally, systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure decreased by 5 mmHg and 4 mmHg, respectively.

“CBF is an important physiological marker of brain vascular function and refers to the amount of blood that flows through the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients that are essential for maintaining brain health,” said Peter Joris, an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences at Maastricht University Medical Center. “We found that longer-term consumption of unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts improved global CBF, which suggests an overall enhancement in brain vascular function.”

The researchers specifically noted improvements in blood flow in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, areas linked to memory and other cognitive functions. This is particularly relevant in light of the increasing rates of cognitive decline and dementia among older populations. The World Health Organization reports that as of 2021, 57 million people worldwide were living with dementia, and projections estimate that this number will surge to 139 million by 2050.

Joris emphasized the significance of these findings, particularly for older adults whose cognitive function may be impaired with age. “For the first time, we demonstrated that peanut intake improved brain vascular function in healthy older adults. These favorable effects may help explain the observed improvements in memory, providing novel mechanistic insight into how regular peanut consumption can beneficially affect cognitive function,” he added.
