Unbelievable! South Girls Soccer Crushes Dimond—You Won't Believe the Final Score!

In a fierce and captivating rivalry that has defined high school soccer in Alaska, the South Anchorage Wolverines and Dimond Lynx faced off once again in the Division I girls state soccer championship match on May 27, 2023. This matchup marks the sixth consecutive time these two teams have met for the title, showcasing a fierce competition that has captured the hearts of local fans.

Since 2019, excluding the 2020 season when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of most spring sports, the Wolverines and Lynx have alternated dominance in the state’s top level of competition. South Anchorage entered the match as the reigning state champion and proved its mettle by decisively defeating Dimond 5-0 on a frigid Tuesday night. This victory not only solidified South's reputation but also extended their unbeaten streak to 21 consecutive matches, dating back to their impressive 16-0-1 record last season.

“Over the past four years, we’ve won some, we’ve lost some, we’ve tied some, and it’s always great to come out with a win — especially against Dimond. They’re our biggest rivals,” stated senior Ali Boshell. Her sentiments reflect the competitive spirit and deep-rooted rivalry that has developed between the two schools.

While the final score might suggest a one-sided contest, the game revealed a different narrative. South seized the lead early, scoring just 10 minutes into the match. However, they only managed a 1-0 advantage at halftime. The Wolverines turned it up a notch in the second half, scoring four more goals to secure a commanding victory. “For me at least, it was just get out there, be intense, and show them what South is all about,” Boshell explained. The team's strategy focused on community and collaboration, which became evident as they executed intricate plays that overwhelmed the Lynx in the latter half of the match.

The game was predominantly played in Dimond's territory, highlighting South's superior control and tactical execution. “We had five different scorers, and that was the main goal,” Boshell emphasized, a testament to the teamwork and diverse skill set of the Wolverines. Despite their early struggles, the team adapted and intensified their efforts, demonstrating resilience and tactical awareness.

Interestingly, while this rivalry fuels intense competition during the season, many players from both teams often play together on club teams, fostering a sense of camaraderie that softens the rivalry. “We know their strengths and their weaknesses, so we play to those and match up based on that,” Boshell noted, emphasizing the strategic preparation that goes into these high-stakes matches.

Looking forward, South Anchorage is not resting on its laurels. The Wolverines plan to review game film to identify areas for improvement, aiming to build on their success and widen the gap against their competitors in the next encounter.

Lynx Take Solace in Moral Victory

On the other side of the field, Dimond head coach Will Lucero maintained an optimistic outlook despite the scoreline. “I’m not mad at all because we were playing with JV players, non-starters; a lot of my starters are hurt. So for them to come out in a rival game like this is huge for the experience that those players need to get,” he explained. This year, Dimond's squad is primarily comprised of freshmen and newer players, creating a unique environment filled with potential.

Even as they faced defeat, Lucero recognized the positives from the match. “If we can maintain a little competitiveness, once my players that are injured come to play, it’ll be a fun game,” he said. The fact that Dimond managed to keep the score close during the first half reflects the talent and determination of their emerging players.

This home game marked the Lynx’s first matchup of the season at their own field, with Lucero expressing pride in the sense of community surrounding Dimond. “The pride of Dimond just goes deep. Just to be out here and compete, it’s the best, especially at 9 o’clock at night and it’s still daylight.”

As the soccer season continues and snow melts, both teams look to build on their experiences, with South Anchorage eyeing further victories and Dimond aiming for growth and resilience. The ongoing rivalry promises to thrill fans and players alike as they navigate the challenges of the high school soccer landscape in Alaska.
