This Startup Just Secured €3.6M—Is the Future of Maritime Tech About to Change Forever?

Mirai Robotics, a fledgling startup based in Puglia, Italy, is making waves in the maritime sector by raising €3.6 million (approximately $4.2 million) in a pre-Seed equity round. This funding aims to accelerate the development of autonomous systems and information intelligence platforms tailored for maritime operations. The investment round was spearheaded by Primo Ventures, Techshop, and 40Jemz Ventures, with backing from a group of prominent Italian and international angel investors.
According to Luciano Belviso, co-founder and CEO of Mirai Robotics, “The sea is one of the last major physical infrastructures not yet governed by software. Autonomy is the key to finally making the oceans safe and usable, unlocking enormous resources and addressing critical security challenges.” He emphasizes that the implementation of such technology must be capable of operating continuously and safely in extreme conditions, framing this as a significant technological and industrial challenge that requires a comprehensive robotics-lab approach.
Founded in 2025 by Belviso, Luca Mascaro, and Davide Dattoli, Mirai Robotics aspires to create physical autonomy technologies that can thrive in mission-critical environments where reliability, safety, and control are paramount. The startup identifies the maritime sector as one of the most complex and under-digitized environments, characterized by high operational costs, limited continuous observability, significant exposure to risk, and a heavy reliance on human operators.
This situation is exacerbated by a structural shortage of qualified professionals in maritime roles. With many positions difficult to fill and the average age of captains and operators on the rise, the viability of a fully human-centric model is diminishing. Mirai Robotics aims to address these challenges by developing robotic infrastructures that make the sea more manageable, safe, and observable.
Mirai Robotics asserts that its systems are designed for continuous surveillance, patrolling, monitoring, and control, ultimately minimizing human risk while significantly lowering operational costs compared to traditional methods. The company places a strong emphasis on integrating autonomous vehicles, advanced sensing technology, artificial intelligence, and control systems. Its unique selling proposition lies in treating autonomy as a comprehensive engineering and industrial challenge rather than merely a software issue.
The startup has already developed two autonomous vehicles tailored for varying operational needs, specifically in ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) and patrolling scenarios in both coastal and offshore environments. These vehicles are equipped with advanced perception systems, autonomous navigation capabilities, remote control functions, and safety features, designed to operate as standalone units or as part of a distributed system.
In addition to its proprietary platforms, Mirai Robotics also creates autonomy, navigation, and control solutions that can be integrated into existing third-party vehicles. This flexibility allows industrial and institutional operators to adopt autonomous technologies without overhauling their current fleets. Mirai’s approach is framed around a “dual-use by design” principle, expanding the technology’s applicability across various civil and institutional sectors.
Belviso notes the strategic choice to establish the company in Italy, a country with a storied history in shipbuilding and maritime engineering. He points out that Italy boasts internationally recognized excellence in defense, yachting, offshore activities, and marine infrastructure. Mirai Robotics emerges at the intersection of this rich industrial heritage and a wave of new technologies based on robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems.
