This Adorable Zoo Cat Went Viral—But Why Can't He Find Love? You Won't Believe the Reason!

In a curious turn of events, Timofei, the social media sensation and Pallas’s cat from the Moscow Zoo, has struggled to find a mate, with at least seven countries declining to provide a genetically suitable female. The Moscow Zoo, which aims to preserve the species' genetic diversity, has been actively seeking a partner for Timofei, born in 2020 in Novosibirsk and now a beloved figure in the zoo.
Efforts to secure a female cat have faced hurdles. Japan’s Higashiyama Zoo recently stated that it cannot transfer its Pallas’s cats, as both are on loan and the zoo is also looking to acquire new specimens. “Both Pallas’s cats at our Higashiyama Zoo are on loan, so we cannot transfer them,” a representative told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.
Similarly, the Warsaw Zoo declined to provide its female Pallas’s cat, Jessie, who has been lauded as the zoo’s “Animal of the Year” for 2024. In a statement, a zoo representative expressed the significance of Jessie, stating, “She is our star and we are not searching for a partner for our female [cat] in Russia.”
Other institutions have also cited various reasons for their refusals. The French Spaycific’Zoo reported that its female Pallas’s cats are currently carrying feline herpes virus, making them unsuitable for breeding. The only female Pallas’s cat at the Finnish Zoo has already formed a stable breeding pair, limiting options even further.
Both the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands and Nordens Ark Zoo in Sweden indicated that decisions regarding breeding pairs are overseen by the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) coordinator based on genetic recommendations. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland manages the EEP for Pallas’s cats in Europe, directing inquiries for mate requests to its coordinator. The Berlin Zoo also cited similar reasons for not providing a potential mate.
Despite these setbacks, Timofei has captured the hearts of many. His seasonal weight gain, known as “zazhirovka” in Russian, has made him a favorite on social media, even surpassing the popularity of Choupette, the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's pet, according to a study by Yandex Dzen in August 2025.
While Pallas’s cats are currently listed as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to their widespread range and assumed large population, the importance of genetic diversity in captive breeding programs cannot be overstated. Each declined offer for a mate raises questions about the future of this species in zoos and its conservation efforts worldwide.
As the Moscow Zoo continues its search for a mate for Timofei, the challenges he faces serve as a poignant reminder of the complexities involved in wildlife conservation and the interconnectedness of global efforts to preserve endangered species.
