The Circus Spectacular Is Back: 5 Shocking Acts You Won't Believe Are Real! Don't Miss Out!

BRATTLEBORO — The New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) is set to dazzle audiences with its 16th annual Circus Spectacular, a major fundraising event that promises to bring world-class entertainment to Southern Vermont for just one weekend on March 7 and 8. This celebrated event not only marks 16 years of circus wonder but also features a remarkable lineup of both international and local talent.

This year’s show is particularly special due to a "circus reunion" with special guest Ringmaster Eric Micheal Gillett. Known for his work as the singing Ringmaster for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Gillett will share the stage with NECCA co-founder Serenity Smith Forchion, who began her professional career with Ringling in 1990. Gillett, who is also a cabaret singer, actor, and director of an edition of the Big Apple Circus, will be joined by former Ringling clown Troy Wunderle from Bellows Falls, who will present his new comedy magic routine.

In a thrilling last-minute addition, accomplished acrobat and clown Joel Baker will also be performing. Recently signed as the lead clown for Cirque du Soleil’s Alegrîa, Baker is known for his unique blend of clowning and acrobatics, reminiscent of greats like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. His appearance at the Circus Spectacular is particularly notable, as he will take the stage just before heading off for international tours.

“Joel Baker’s last-minute addition to our lineup is indicative of the talent pool we now have in Brattleboro,” said Elena Day, NECCA’s Managing Director, in a news release. “He made Brattleboro his home base a few years ago to be closer to a vibrant circle of circus folks, and built an adorable tiny home he comes back to when not on tour.” Day, who also moved to Brattleboro after years as a clown character on Cirque du Soleil, expressed her excitement to see Baker's act before he becomes a circus superstar. “Joel is an accomplished acrobat as well as a clown,” she added, “and he mixes the two to hilarious effect in the traditions of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.”

The Circus Spectacular will take place at NECCA’s Trapezium training facility located on Town Crier Drive. Audiences can expect to see a variety of high-flying and dazzling performances from talented artists based in Colorado, Georgia, Chicago, Boston, and Montreal. Featured acts will include swinging trapeze, hula hoops, hair suspension, juggling, aerial hoop, and duo pole routines, showcasing the diverse talents of these performers.

Forchion, now the producing director at NECCA, emphasizes the importance of this annual event, noting that the funds raised help directly support programs and financial aid initiatives. “Every ticket sold supports NECCA’s mission to provide inclusive and financially accessible circus arts training for all ages, from the Silver Circus (60+) to pre-professional youth programs,” she stated.

During the weekend of the Circus Spectacular, the Trapezium transforms into a circus theater. The venue will feature chairs arranged on risers, theatrical lighting, and an impressive 35-foot tall black curtain that creates a backdrop nearly 80 feet long. After the event concludes, this vibrant space will return to its role as an educational center.

Showtimes for both days are set for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $50 and can be purchased at www.CircusSchool.org. For additional information, interested parties can reach out by calling 802-254-9780.
