Texas Tech's Shocking Slip: What Caused a 3-Spot Plummet in Just 7 Days? Find Out!

The Duke Blue Devils have reclaimed their status at the top of college basketball, surging back to the No. 1 position in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll following their recent victory against the Michigan Wolverines. The win, a tightly contested 68-63 matchup held in Washington, D.C., marked Duke's impressive 148th appearance at the No. 1 spot, further solidifying their record as the program with the most weeks ranked first.
With a season record of 25-2, Duke received an overwhelming 56 out of 61 first-place votes, overtaking Michigan, which also stands at 25-2. This victory was particularly significant as it came just hours after the NCAA men’s selection committee revealed its preliminary top 16 seeds for the upcoming March Madness tournament, where Duke and Michigan were positioned as the top two teams.
The Blue Devils have had a remarkable season so far, boasting the national-best record of 12 Quadrant 1 wins and nine victories against ranked teams. Under the guidance of fourth-year coach Jon Scheyer, Duke is on track to build on last year's success, when they reached the Final Four and topped the polls as they approached the NCAA Tournament. Scheyer succeeded the legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, who retired in 2022, marking a new era for the program.
Shifting Rankings
In the latest poll, Arizona climbed two spots to No. 2 after impressive victories over BYU and Houston. Meanwhile, Michigan slipped to No. 3, marking the end of their brief stint at the top, which was their first since January 2013. Completing the top five are Iowa State at No. 4 and Houston at No. 5, both of whom have shown strong performances this season.
The UConn Huskies dropped one spot to No. 6 after suffering a home loss to Creighton, while the reigning national champions, the Florida Gators, jumped five places to No. 7, returning to the top 10 for the first time since late November. The Gators have been on a roll, winning seven straight games and 12 of their last 13.
As the tournament approaches, the NCAA selection committee had initially categorized Michigan, Duke, Arizona, and Iowa State as No. 1 seeds during their preliminary reveal. The Cyclones managed to secure a top seed over UConn and Houston due to their recent performances, including a significant head-to-head win against the Cougars.
In terms of alignment with the AP poll, the committee's top four seeds corresponded with the latest rankings, albeit in a shuffled order, with Iowa State even moving up two spots despite their loss to now-No. 19 BYU.
Rising and Falling Teams
Among the teams making notable moves, Alabama had the most significant jump, climbing eight spots to No. 17 after a thrilling double-overtime victory against Arkansas. This win, along with a subsequent win at LSU, has extended the Crimson Tide's winning streak to six games. Florida also made headlines with their rising position, while BYU advanced four spots due to their recent victories.
Conversely, the Kansas Jayhawks and Vanderbilt Commodores experienced the largest declines, each dropping six spots. Kansas suffered a disappointing 16-point home loss to Cincinnati, while Vanderbilt struggled with two consecutive losses, marking a stark contrast to their once-promising 16-0 start earlier in the season.
The Big 12 conference continues to prove its dominance, leading all conferences with six ranked teams, while the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference each had five teams in the rankings. The Atlantic Coast Conference follows with four ranked teams, adding to the competitive landscape as the season progresses.
As the college basketball season approaches the climax with March Madness on the horizon, fans can expect an intense battle for supremacy among these top contenders. With Duke's strong resurgence and the shifting dynamics of the rankings, the excitement surrounding this year's tournament is palpable.
