Sterling Girls Soccer's Shocking Youth Strategy: Is This the Secret to Their Success? You Won't Believe the Numbers!

As the spring season unfolds, the Sterling High School girls soccer team has embarked on a journey filled with both challenges and growth. After three games, the Tigers have secured a victory, a promising start for a relatively young team.

On March 16, the Tigers faced off against Clear Creek, traveling up I-70 into the mountains where they emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 win. However, the following two matches proved more difficult, resulting in a 6-1 loss to Wellington and a 5-2 defeat against Gering, Nebraska. These setbacks highlight the team's ongoing adjustment to the demanding varsity level of play.

This season, Sterling's roster includes 20 players, with eight newcomers stepping onto the field as freshmen. The team has experienced significant turnover since last year, having lost five seniors—among them four critical scorers, including Lydia Boxberger, who topped the team with four goals.

Adding to the challenge, goalkeeper Racquel Lopez, who recorded 106 saves while allowing 30 goals last season, also graduated, leaving a gap in defense. Coach Andy Mildenberger reflected on this transition, stating, “From last year, we lost one of our main scorers and then our keeper and our main defensive player. The younger girls are definitely stepping up. It’s just experience level, primarily on the defensive side of it.”

Despite these departures, the team retains a key player in junior striker Kylie Mildenberger, who was instrumental last season, contributing 15 of the team's 31 goals. Despite the 6-6-2 record last year, Coach Mildenberger remains optimistic, praising the effort and potential of the team's newcomers. “It’s really hard to name names because (the freshmen) all stepped into a pretty major position of playing,” he noted. “All of them that have been on the field have stepped up and are doing the best they can. I think we’ve got a great future working ahead. It’s just all an experience and trying to get everyone up to the high school game speed.”

The Tigers’ next opportunity to showcase their growth comes on Saturday when they face Union Colony Prep at 11 a.m. As they continue to navigate this season, the blend of seasoned players and fresh talent will be crucial in their quest for improvement and success on the field. The journey may be tough, but the potential for the Sterling girls soccer team is unmistakable, and their determination to rise to the occasion is a story that will resonate with fans and supporters alike.
