Starbase Election Canceled! Why Elon Musk's Allies Are Running Unopposed—What’s at Stake?

The City of Starbase, home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX launch facility in South Texas, is poised to cancel its upcoming city election. This decision comes after no candidates emerged to challenge the current officeholders for the upcoming election scheduled for May 2, 2026.

The Starbase City Commission is set to discuss an ordinance to cancel the election during a meeting on March 18, 2026. Local law in Texas permits municipalities to cancel elections when all races on the ballot are uncontested. Consequently, the existing leadership will continue to serve without the need for a vote from the residents.

Robert “Bobby” Peden, the city’s inaugural mayor, is also a vice president at SpaceX, overseeing the company’s operations in Texas. He is joined by two commissioners: Jordan Buss, a senior director of environmental health and safety at SpaceX, and Lois Wallace, an interim commissioner and resident of Starbase.

Starbase became an official city after residents successfully petitioned for its incorporation, which was approved by Cameron County. This move is closely tied to the development of the SpaceX launch site near Boca Chica Beach, which began in 2014 as part of the company’s ambitious Starship rocket program. Over the years, the area has evolved into a significant hub for rocket testing and spaceflight operations.

The lack of competition in the upcoming election highlights the unique relationship between Starbase and SpaceX, as the company has been instrumental in shaping the region’s identity and economic landscape. It raises questions about the democratic process in a city that is heavily influenced by a single corporation and its leadership.

As the city commission prepares for its meeting later this month, residents and observers alike will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts the local governance and community engagement in a city that is still navigating its identity in the shadow of a global leader in aerospace innovation.
