Small Businesses: Discover How a Single Permit Could Skyrocket Your Profits on Jan. 29!

In an effort to bolster local businesses, the City of Sacramento is introducing a new Limited Entertainment Permit (LEP) designed specifically for small venues. This streamlined option, which carries reduced fees and fewer requirements, aims to make it easier for businesses to host live entertainment and thereby enhance their community engagement.

Set to take place on January 29, from 3-4 p.m. at 300 Richards Blvd., Room 221, the City will conduct outreach and training sessions to help small business owners navigate the LEP application process. Attendees can take advantage of free parking available on site. Melissa Romero, the City’s Program Manager, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, “This permit is about removing barriers for small businesses that want to offer live entertainment while maintaining clear and predictable standards.”

The LEP permits establishments with an occupancy of 299 people or fewer to offer entertainment as a secondary activity. A significant financial incentive accompanies this permit—costing just $750 for two years, it is a much more affordable alternative to the City’s general entertainment permit. By reducing the financial burden on small businesses, the LEP aims to foster a vibrant local entertainment scene.

Eligible venues include restaurants, bars, cafes, breweries, and wineries. The LEP caters to the unique needs of these establishments by imposing limited entertainment hours and scaled requirements that align with their size and operations. Types of entertainment that fall under the LEP include live performances like DJs, open mic nights, comedy shows, and amplified music, along with ticketed events. Interestingly, activities such as background music, trivia nights, and unamplified live performances do not typically require a permit, making it easier for businesses to engage their customers without extensive regulatory hurdles.

This initiative aligns with the City of Sacramento’s ongoing commitment to support local businesses and artists. By facilitating a more accessible framework for live entertainment, the City hopes to invigorate community spaces and provide a platform for local performers to showcase their talents. “The Limited Entertainment Permit provides a more accessible option for businesses to activate their spaces and support local performers,” Romero added, highlighting the dual benefit of the program.

For small business owners looking to expand their entertainment offerings, attending the training session on January 29 could serve as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the LEP and how it can help them enhance their customer experience while supporting the local arts scene.

More information about the Limited Entertainment Permit, including application details and eligibility criteria, is available on the City’s official website. This initiative not only represents a strategic move to support local businesses but also reflects a broader trend in which cities across the U.S. are recognizing the importance of arts and culture in boosting community engagement and economic development.
