SM Entertainment's Bold Gamble: Will 'Next 3.0' Save Them After BoA's Shocking Exit?

In a significant shift for the K-pop landscape, SM Entertainment has announced a comprehensive restructuring plan dubbed "SM Next 3.0," following the departure of its most iconic figure, BoA. The company confirmed the end of its partnership with BoA in December 2022, marking the conclusion of her 25-year journey with the label, which began with her debut in 2000. Her exit resonates deeply, as she was not only a star but also a non-executive director who contributed to the creative direction of the company.
BoA's departure is especially poignant as it follows the exits of Lee Soo-man, the founder and executive producer of SM, and hitmaker Yoo Young-jin. With nearly all of its founding figures gone, the question arises: Can SM Entertainment maintain its unique musical identity and legacy? Currently, composer Kenzie remains as the last link to the agency's founding generation.
In her farewell message on social media, BoA expressed gratitude, stating, "I leave without regrets, having given and received unsparingly. I am grateful for our time together and will support SM Entertainment as it shines. Thank you."
The restructuring initiative, "SM Next 3.0," represents a pivotal moment for the company, transitioning from a model that relied heavily on a single executive producer to one emphasizing individual creative leadership. The new strategy aims to enhance the agency's production capabilities by decentralizing the album production and management processes. The five existing production centers will be reorganized into specialized organizations focused on distinct aspects like music videos and artist development.
Additionally, SM plans to collaborate closely with its music publishing label, Kreation Music Rights, to tailor projects specifically for each artist, further solidifying its focus on individualization in a rapidly evolving global market. SM CEO Tak Young-jun announced that the company’s upcoming boy band—its first since BoA's last production project with NCT WISH—will be unveiled through the variety show "Reply High School" early in the year. Some members will be selected from the trainee team SMTR25, and this new group is expected to set the musical and visual direction for the "next SM."
As the restructuring unfolds, industry observers are keenly watching whether the company can preserve its "Pink Blood"—the unique identity shared between SM artists and their fans—or if the new creative leadership will lead to a complete overhaul of its legacy to better align with global market trends. With BoA's exit and the restructuring of SM Entertainment, the K-pop powerhouse enters a new era, one filled with both opportunity and uncertainty as it seeks to solidify its place in an increasingly competitive global music landscape.
