Shocking Nomination: Why Kevin Jarvis Could Change Labor Laws Forever—Find Out Now!

TRENTON — Governor Mikie Sherrill has nominated Kevin Jarvis to serve as the next Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The announcement comes as New Jersey continues to navigate the complexities of workforce development in an evolving job market.
If confirmed by the New Jersey Senate, Jarvis will spearhead efforts to expand access to workforce training programs, strengthen partnerships between higher education and businesses, and improve the quality and efficiency of government services. His agenda also includes increasing career opportunities for individuals with disabilities and continuing to protect the rights of New Jersey workers.
“Kevin’s depth of experience advocating for the rights of New Jersey’s workers makes him an ideal candidate to serve as New Jersey’s Labor Commissioner,” stated Governor Sherrill. “As we work to create more opportunities for New Jerseyans to find great jobs and get ahead, Kevin’s experience will be invaluable in strengthening the resources available to our communities.”
Jarvis expressed gratitude for the nomination, emphasizing the potential of New Jersey as a hub of innovation. “New Jersey is the epicenter of innovation, and I look forward to working with Governor Sherrill to cultivate a workforce ready to respond to our evolving employment landscape,” he said.
With extensive experience in labor law and public service, Jarvis is well-prepared for this role. He previously practiced labor law as a partner with the firm O’Brien, Belland & Bushinsky, where he handled contract negotiations, grievance and arbitration hearings, unfair labor practice cases, and Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) litigation. His return to public service follows nearly four years as Chief of Staff at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, a role that equipped him with vital insights into the department's operations and challenges.
Jarvis’s career also includes significant litigation experience, representing hundreds of workers from various sectors, including the building trades and railroad industry, who suffered injuries from workplace exposure to hazardous materials like asbestos and diesel exhaust fumes. This background underscores his commitment to advocating for worker rights and safety.
Academically, Jarvis earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and English from Rutgers University in 1993 and a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law in 2001. This educational foundation complements his practical experience, positioning him to effectively address the current and future challenges within New Jersey’s labor landscape.
Jarvis’s nomination arrives at a crucial time for New Jersey's workforce, which has been significantly impacted by recent economic shifts. As the state works to recover from the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, enhancing labor policies and workforce development programs will be essential for ensuring sustainable growth and job creation.
As the nomination advances to the New Jersey Senate for confirmation consideration, many are watching closely to see how Jarvis's leadership will shape the future of labor in New Jersey. His deep understanding of the legal landscape combined with a proactive approach to workforce development could foster a more equitable and robust job market for all New Jerseyans.
