Shocking Bus Rollover Halts Marquette-QND Soccer Game—What Really Happened?

In a scheduled non-conference match at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the Marquette Catholic High School girls soccer team was set to compete against their rivals, Quincy Notre Dame (QND). However, an unforeseen incident altered the course of the evening. Just before the game, around 4:20 p.m., Marquette's coach and athletic director, Brian Hoener, received a call from Bill Connell, the athletic director at Quincy Notre Dame, informing him that the QND team would not be able to make it due to a bus accident.

The rollover incident involved a North Greene School District bus, which went off U.S. 67 and rolled over south of White Hall. Although the QND soccer team’s bus was traveling behind the North Greene bus, it was not part of the accident. Nevertheless, the QND bus remained at the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation.

According to Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen, one student had to be extricated from the bus by firefighters, but fortunately, the driver and all other students and staff managed to exit safely. While several passengers sustained injuries, none appeared to be life-threatening. “It puts everything into perspective,” Hoener remarked, emphasizing his relief that no serious injuries occurred.

As a result of the incident, the highly anticipated soccer match was canceled, but there is a possibility it may be rescheduled. Hoener noted, “We’ll have to get together with QND and look to see if we have any open dates that work.” However, he also mentioned that as the season progresses, finding mutually available dates may become challenging.

This incident highlights not only the unpredictability of sports schedules but also the importance of safety in student transportation. While the primary concern rests with the health and well-being of the students involved, it also brings to light the broader issues of transportation safety in school districts across the nation. The fact that the QND bus was on the scene but not directly involved in the accident could have easily led to a very different outcome.
