Sheboygan’s I-43 Overhaul Just Got the Green Light—But Here’s What You NEED to Know!

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Wis. – In a significant investment in infrastructure, Governor Tony Evers has approved a $21 million contract aimed at rehabilitating a crucial segment of Interstate 43. The project will span from Lima Road in the town of Wilson to Wisconsin State Highway 42 in Sheboygan, and is set to begin on March 2, with completion anticipated by the fall.
This rehabilitation project is essential as it addresses the deteriorating conditions of the roadway, which is vital for both local commutes and regional transport. According to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project will involve the removal of three inches of the old pavement surface, followed by an overlay of new asphalt. This process is designed not only to enhance the driving experience but also to increase safety for all road users.
In addition to the pavement work, structural maintenance will be performed on nine bridges within the construction zone. This will include activities such as replacing sign structures, slope grading, and installing new beam guards and pavement markings. Such comprehensive work aims to ensure that the infrastructure remains robust and reliable for years to come.
Traffic Changes and Schedule
As with many significant road projects, traffic disruptions are anticipated. During the rehabilitation, drivers can expect reduced lanes in both directions, along with multiple ramp closures. Here’s a detailed schedule of the planned construction stages:
- March 2 to mid-March: Tree clearing and right-of-way (ROW) fencing will occur, with minimal traffic impacts expected.
- Mid-March to July: Long-term lane closures will be implemented on I-43.
- July to November: Intermittent lane closures will take place during non-peak travel times.
- July to August: Significant closures of the southbound I-43 collector/distributor ramp and associated loop ramp at WIS 23.
- July to August: Northbound I-43 collector/distributor ramp and associated loop ramps at WIS 23 will also be affected.
- July to September: Long-term lane closures on County PP over I-43.
- March to November: I-43 ramps at County V, WIS 28, and WIS 42 will be closed for a maximum of two consecutive days during paving operations.
- Late October/early November: The project is scheduled for completion.
The bridge work will necessitate the closure of the I-43 southbound and northbound collector/distributor ramps and their loop ramps at WIS 23 for a total of 35 working days during July and August. Nighttime closures may also occur during paving operations.
Traffic on County PP over I-43 will be limited to one lane during construction, with temporary traffic signals implemented to manage flow. Motorists are advised to consult the project website for detour routes, maps, and updates regarding the ongoing construction.
This infrastructure project not only represents a substantial investment in local transportation but also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and improving our public roadways. By enhancing these critical routes, the state aims to foster safer travel conditions for residents and visitors alike.
