Self Labs Just Made a Shocking Move—Find Out How Loam’s Tech Could Change Everything!

In a significant move within the tech industry, Self Labs, a company specializing in Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) identity verification and proof-of-personhood (PoP), has acquired Loam, a U.S.-based AI agent and automation startup. The acquisition aims to enhance Self's ability to integrate its digital identity infrastructure into various applications, including enterprise workflows and popular consumer platforms like social media.

Founded in 2022 by Birju Shah, a former head of AI at Uber and an assistant professor at Northwestern University, Loam has developed AI agents designed for autonomous purchases of farmland. This expertise in agentic system design aligns well with Self’s mission of providing robust identity verification solutions.

While the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, it has been confirmed that Shah will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Self. “Birju and Loam dramatically strengthen our ability to lead in this agentic era,” stated Rene Reinsberg, co-founder and CEO of Self, emphasizing the strategic importance of this acquisition.

Founded by former members of the blockchain firm Celo, Self Labs has quickly made a name for itself in the digital identity space. The company raised $9 million in a seed funding round in November 2022, with notable participation from Greenfield Capital, Startup Capital Ventures, and the SBI Fund, which is linked to SoftBank. Self's client roster features high-profile names such as Google, Opera, Aave, and Velodrome.

Self Labs offers users the ability to verify their identity without disclosing personal information, confirming attributes such as age, residency, or date of birth. This is achieved through various methods, including biometric passports, ID cards, and digital IDs like India’s Aadhaar. The company currently serves over 14 million verified users across multiple sectors, including enterprise, fintech, and consumer applications.

Additionally, Self Labs has developed the Self Protocol, providing on-chain proof-of-human verification for AI agents. This ensures that digital agents are supported by real, unique humans, which is increasingly vital as AI technology becomes more pervasive.

Shah noted, “Self has built exactly the kind of privacy-preserving human verification layer that this new world needs, and is positioned to become the core identity infrastructure for the internet—not just for users, but for the agents and applications acting on their behalf.” This perspective highlights the growing importance of privacy and security in digital interactions, especially as AI continues to evolve.

In another development, Self recently announced that it would provide proof-of-human verification and sanctions screening infrastructure for USA₮, a federally regulated dollar-backed stablecoin launched by Tether. This partnership came after USA₮ expanded to the Celo blockchain with support from Google Cloud, further solidifying Self's position in the blockchain and identity verification sectors.
