Sage Hill Boys' Shocking Win Over Laguna: Is This the Playoff Breakthrough They Needed?

Sage Hill’s boys’ soccer team has seen a remarkable turnaround this season after languishing at the bottom of the Pacific Coast League standings in recent years. The Lightning struck decisively on Tuesday, clinching a 3-1 victory over Laguna Beach and vaulting themselves firmly into playoff contention.

In a thrilling second half, junior Alex Konovalov equalized the match in the 58th minute, before assisting on a crucial go-ahead goal by his twin brother, Max Konovalov, just eight minutes later. Alex described the pivotal moment, saying, “The first ball over the top... kind of bounced around in the box. I looked up, shot and found the bottom corner.” His confidence proved key as he managed to score despite the competition for the ball.

Both Konovalov brothers demonstrated their skill and teamwork during the game; a long throw-in from teammate Roman Van den Bosch facilitated the second goal. Alex flicked the ball towards Max, who managed to squeeze the shot between the near post and Laguna Beach goalkeeper Wesley Van Horn, who had already been under significant pressure throughout the match.

Sage Hill finished the match with a third goal scored by Sasha Pirghibi in the 78th minute, solidifying their lead. It was a crucial moment, especially after Van Horn had successfully stopped a penalty kick from Max Konovalov just two minutes prior. Meanwhile, Sage Hill goalkeeper Max Van Dooren made a key save in stoppage time to ensure the victory.

Now sitting at 9-6-1 overall and 4-5 in league play, Sage Hill has drawn even with Laguna Beach in the standings, both teams holding 12 points. This shift is particularly significant considering Sage Hill had not recorded a league win in the previous three seasons combined. In contrast, Laguna Beach won the CIF Southern Section Division 4 title last year, highlighting the stark difference in recent histories between the two teams.

“We really do see that they might be the best team in the league,” said Sage Hill coach Raphael Alves. He emphasized the need for consistency as the team works to establish a baseline level of play. “If we really qualify for CIF, we’re going to be in seventh division. I think we’re going to be a really good contender there. But can we do it? That still gets in their minds,” Alves noted, hinting at the psychological hurdles the team faces even as they experience newfound success.

Laguna Beach coach Andy Thomas acknowledged the challenges ahead for his squad, stating, “It’s going to be a struggle... we’re a bit beaten up, we’re a bit tired, and we’re a small squad.” He pointed out that key player Jackson Arrasin was not fully fit due to injury, which has impacted their performance as they battle for league positioning.

As the season progresses, it is essential for both teams to continue pushing for victories. With the league dynamic clearly competitive, teams like Portola and Woodbridge are also contenders, keeping the stakes high for all involved.

As Sage Hill continues to build momentum, the players have begun to embrace the feeling of success, with Alex Konovalov reflecting on the transformational nature of winning. “I think we’re really starting to feel that success in the program... Even in the locker room, everyone’s like cheering and playing music. We believe we can win, finally,” he said. This sense of belief could be the key to their playoff aspirations as they look toward the remainder of the season.
